Nevada Falls to WCC Champs in Season Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Nevada falls 89-64 to 2026 West Coast Conference regular-season champions, Loyola Marymount University, in the season opener Monday night.

Aili Tanke and Mahaila Harrison drove the Wolf Pack as the pair combined for 34 points. Tanke also led the team in rebounds alongside Olivia Poulivaati with six.

LMU had a strong start with a three-pointer and a pair of layups to take the advantage 7-3. The Pack struggled to keep up as two free throws widened the deficit. Aili Tanke was the spark off the bench for the Nevada as she drained back-to-back threes following a couple of steals from Harrison to even the score at 9-9.

The two teams traded points with neither finding the advantage until Tanke sank her fourth three of the quarter to give Nevada the lead, 19-16. Two layups from LMU's Kayla Jones brought the advantage back to LMU to end the first, 20-19.

LMU opened the second with a layup from Jones. The Pack attempted to even the score, but the Lions pulled away with back-to-back jumpers from Maya Hernandez. Jones sealed a double-digit Wolf Pack deficit with a jumper to end the first half, 40-30.

The Lions didn't let up as the team scored a layup and a triple in the first minute of the third. The teams continued to trade points, as the Wolf Pack struggled to find an edge against LMU. The Lions scored in the paint to end the quarter 61-44.

Jones came out with an and-one to start the fourth. Harrison and Britain Backus drained back-to-back threes to lessen the deficit; however, back-to-back Wolf Pack fouls gave the Lions three points from the charity stripe.

Nevada struggled to find an answer to four of LMU's starters as the quartet combined for 65 of their 89 points. The Wolf Pack ended the contest with 64 points and 15 assists.
