Wolf Pack's second-half surge falls short in home opener

RENO, Nev — Nevada drops its home opener to Sacramento State, 70-60, despite a dominant fourth-quarter performance on Saturday evening.

Mahaila Harrison and Alexis Swillis led the Pack, combining for half of the team's points, while Aili Tanke dominated the boards with seven rebounds. Sacramento State's Koko Akridge scored 23, while Natalie Picton put up 17 points as the pair combined for 40 of the Hornets' 70 points.

Sacramento State came out hot with a three and a layup for a 5-0 start. Harrison sparked the Pack with a jumper, followed by a forced Hornet turnover and a three. Freshman Delaney Arredondo drained a shot from outside the arc on the next possession to lessen the deficit to seven with four left to play in the quarter. Two jumpers from Nevada and a three from Sacramento State finalized the first at 20-12 with a Hornet advantage.

The Pack came out hot in the second with a three-ball from Izzy Sullivan, which Sacramento State answered with two points in the paint. An inbound to Hannah Jolinder resulted in a scoring drive to lessen the deficit to five.

Sacramento State took control the rest of the quarter with a 12-0 run. Nevada struggled to take care of the ball in the first half with 11 turnovers, which the Hornets utilized to add 21 to their score. Nevada entered halftime down 44-27.

The Wolf Pack once again kicked-off the quarter with a three, this time from Tanke; however, the Hornets matched the Pack with a three of their own. This became the story of the third, as Nevada worked to find an advantage to narrow the deficit, and Sacramento State matched each scoring drive. A buzzer-beater from Akridge allowed the Hornets to outscore the Wolf Pack 18-16 and end the quarter with a 62-43 advantage.

Nevada found its groove in the fourth, opening the quarter with an 8-2 run to narrow the deficit to 64-51. Sacramento State sank a three to jolt the team into action for the remaining five minutes of play. A jumper and a layup from Swillis and Harrison, respectively, narrowed the gap to nine. Tanke chipped away at the Hornets' advantage with two free throws to get the Pack within seven with just shy of a minute left to go. Sacramento State responded with a free throw and a layup to put the game away at 70-60.

Despite the 10-point deficit, Nevada dominated in the fourth, scoring 17 to Sacramento State's eight points. The Pack's success stemmed from its second-half defense, led by Britain Backus, which limited both Akridge and Picton to three points each in the final 10 minutes of play.
