Reno, Nev. - Virginia Street Gym

RENO, Nev. - Nevada dropped the opener of its weekend set against Wyoming, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-15), Thursday night at Virginia Street Gym.

The Wolf Pack (5-16, 3-8 MW) struggled on offense, hitting just .077 in the match. Paige Thies led the Pack with eight kills but no Wolf Pack player hit higher than .211, that coming from Jess Walkenhorst.

On the other side, Wyoming (11-11, 4-7 MW) hit just .200 led by 10 kills from Paige Lauterwasser.

Wyoming got out to a 15-10 lead by the media timeout of the first set before Nevada made a run. The Pack got a kill from Kamryn Tifft to highlight a 4-0 run to pull within one, then evened it up at 18-18 on Tifft's ace. But with the score tied at 19-19, Wyoming reeled off four-straight points capped by an ace from Anna Melgren before Lauterwasser finished off the 25-21 set win with a kill.

Nevada again fought back out of an early hole in the second, trailing 10-4 before Karly Bonaventure's kill capped an 8-3 run to bring the Pack within one at 13-12. But it was another late pullaway from the Cowgirls which made the difference. Nevada was within one at 20-19 before Lauterwasser made three kills in the Cowgirls' 5-0 close to the stanza.

In the third it was Wyoming's turn to storm back. Nevada ran out to an 8-0 lead helped by multiple attack errors from Wyoming. But the lead steadily dripped away as Wyoming went on a 10-2 run to even it up at 10-10. After the teams traded points Wyoming ran away, going on a 12-3 run to take control at 23-13. Lauterwasser would again close it out, her kill sealing the 25-15 match-clinching set win.

The teams will finish the weekend set Saturday at 1 p.m.
