Nevada volleyball falls to UC Irvine in five sets

Box Score OGDEN, Utah - Nevada closed out the Wildcat Invitational to UC Irvine Saturday morning, falling to the Anteaters in five sets, 3-2.

The first set began with a block by Kamryn Tifft to put the Pack up 1-0 before the Anteaters scored two. Nevada tied it up at two off a service error, but wasn't able to overtake UC Irvine.

Set one came to a close as the Anteaters grabbed a commanding lead, ending the first with a score of 25-8.

Nevada completely flipped the switch in the second set. Despite UC Irvine quickly going up 2-0, Nevada went on a four-point scoring run to take the lead. It started with a kill by Mckaley Herr and was capped off with an attack error by the Anteaters, putting the Pack up, 4-2.

From there, the lead continued to build. Nevada scored 10 consecutive points while UC Irvine was stuck at seven. The Pack's largest lead of 14 came with the final score of the set, 25-11.

It was a back-and-forth battle as the teams traded the lead through the third set. There were seven ties and six lead changes. Nevada began to pull away late in the set, getting the largest lead of either team in the third when they went up 24-17. The Pack went up two sets to one after taking the third, 25-20.

The fourth started much like the third, both teams fighting for the advantage. This time, Nevada was unable to take the lead as UC Irvine grabbed the set win, 25-18.

Into the fifth, the Pack scored the first point of the set, but the Anteaters jumped in front and didn't give up the lead for the remainder. Nevada ultimately fell to UC Irvine, 3-2.

Haylee Brown led both teams in kills with 18, followed by Herr with 10. Kinsley Singleton had 18 digs and 17 assists, while Ambri Hanohano also had 17 assists.

Nevada will be back at it next weekend, competing in the The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Classic, hosted by Kansas State. Nevada will play NC State at 10 AM on Sept. 4 and Kansas State at 10 AM the following day.
