RENO, Nev. - Nevada lefty
Alessandro Castro was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week Monday for his gem in the Wolf Pack's regular season title-clinching victory Friday at San José State.
The honor is Castro's first, and the third for the Wolf Pack pitching staff this season. The three honors for the Pack are its most since claiming five in 2018.
Friday night in San Jose, Castro improved to 4-1 in Mountain West play and clinched Nevada's fourth Mountain West regular-season title by scattering seven hits and striking out four over seven scoreless innings in the Wolf Pack's 12-0 win.
Castro made efficient work of the Spartans, throwing just 72 pitches in the outing and not issuing a free pass. The Tucson, Ariz., native kept the Spartans off the board in a deadlocked contest through four innings until the Nevada offense broke it open with a six-run fifth. After escaping a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the bottom of the fifth, Castro finished his outing with 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh.
Along with the regular season conference title, Nevada (33-21, 19-11 MW) also clinched the No. 1 seed at this week's Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona. The Wolf Pack will begin play in the four-team, double-elimination portion of the draw Thursday at 1:05 p.m., facing the winner of Wednesday's 6:05 p.m. play-in game between No. 4 UNLV and No. 5 San Diego State.
