Wolf Pack walks-off series win over San Diego State

Nevada 11, San Diego State 1 (7)
Sunday, May 11, 2025
Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park

WP: Casey Burfield (4-2)
LP: Garvey Rumary (2-7)

RENO, Nev. - The "Walk-Off Wolf Pack" did it again Sunday. This time it was only slightly less dramatic because of the run-rule, but Sean Yamaguchi's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh still brought a roar from the faithful as Nevada closed its 2025 home slate and captured the series with San Diego State with an 11-1, seven-inning win.

The win, combined with Sunday losses by Fresno State and New Mexico, not only clinched for Nevada (31-20, 17-10 MW) a top-two seed and a bye into the double-elimination part of May 21-24's Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship, but it also put the Wolf Pack into the driver's seat for the conference regular-season title. Nevada enters next week's final three games a game ahead of both the Bulldogs and Lobos.

The Wolf Pack travels to San José State for its final series next Thursday-Saturday, while the Bulldogs and Lobos face off in Albuquerque.

The win was also Nevada's 31st of the campaign, marking the Wolf Pack's highest win total since going 37-24 in 2016.

Sunday, senior Casey Burfield was on point on the hill. Burfield scattered eight hits and gave up just one run with four strikeouts, going to distance for his fourth win of the season.

Burfield cruised late, quickly setting the Aztecs down in order in the seventh to set up Nevada's game-clinching frame. His seven-inning outing matched his career high, achieved thrice prior.

San Diego State (16-37, 11-16 MW) took an early 1-0 lead on CJ Moran's RBI double in the first, but it was all Nevada after that. The Wolf Pack took over with seven runs in the third inning and never looked back.

With one out, Jayce Dobie doubled and Michael Ball singled to put runners at second and third, setting up Billy Ham's game-tying single. Taylor Holder dropped a great bunt down the first-base line and beat it out to score Ball with the go-ahead run, then Jacob Doyle's double down the line in left made it 3-1.

Holder scored on a balk by Aztec starter Garvey Rumary, then, after a Jack Metcho walk, came around with Metcho on Jake Harvey's double to left. Two batters later, Dobie was up again and drove in the final run of the frame with a single to center.

Dobie, Holder, and Doyle each went 3-for-4 with a double for the Wolf Pack, with Holder and Doyle each hitting a solo homer and driving in two runs. Harvey also doubled and drove in two, while going 2-for-4.

Rumary fell to 2-7 with the loss for San Diego State (16-37, 11-16 MW), giving up seven runs on eight hits and four walks over 2.2 innings.

Holder's solo homer in the fourth made it 8-1 Wolf Pack, then Nevada ended it in the seventh. Doyle got the scoring started with his homer, then Harvey and Metcho made their ways on and into scoring position with Yamaguchi up. Yamaguchi ended it with a line drive towards the line in left, easily plating the runners and notching the Pack's fourth walk-off win in its last five Mountain West games.
