LAS VEGAS - A tough start did Nevada in Friday night in Las Vegas as the Wolf Pack dropped the series opener at UNLV, 10-4.

Two Rebel homers keyed a three-run first inning against Nevada starter Peyton Fosher, and three more runs in the third gave UNLV (15-14, 3-7 MW) all the support starter Carson Lane needed.

Lane held the Wolf Pack bats in check, allowing just five hits while striking out seven over 7.1 innings. His only blemish came in the top of the eighth, as Junhyuk Kwon hit a two-run homer to get Nevada on the board.

Nevada managed to load the bases with two out after Kwon's homer, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Jayce Dobie popped up to second against Alex Overbay, who went on to finish the ninth for his third save.

Cole Koniarsky opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first, and Brendan O'Sullivan made it back-to-back with a solo shot. Two innings later, O'Sullivan made it 4-0 with an RBI double, and Gunnar Myro drove in two with a single to right-center.

Fosher fell to 2-3 on the year, charged with six runs on 10 hits over three innings. Reliever Eric Valdez was a bright spot, keeping the Wolf Pack hopes alive by holding the Rebels scoreless from the fourth through seventh innings.

But the Wolf Pack (17-12, 6-4 MW) could not get the bats going against Lane. Kwon and Jackson Waller each had two hits, with Waller adding a ninth-inning RBI, and Michael Ball also had an RBI single in the ninth.

UNLV put the game in the fridge with four runs in the eighth against Valdez and Eddie Tierney.

Nevada will try to even the series Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.
