Las Vegas, Nev. - Earl E. Wilson Stadium
WP: LJ Mercurius (3-3)
LP: Alessandro Castro (4-3)
LAS VEGAS - Nevada will try to avert the sweep in Sunday's series finale at UNLV after being shutout, 3-0, by Saturday.
The series finale is set for a 12:05 p.m. first pitch.
UNLV starter LJ Mercurius confounded Nevada bats all evening, going the distance and striking out 12 while limiting the Wolf Pack to just three hits.
As with Friday night, the Rebels (16-14, 4-7 MW) got all the runs they needed early on. Cole Koniarsky opened the scoring with a solo shot off of Wolf Pack starter
Alessandro Castro in the second, then runs in each of the third and fourth on a Brendan O'Sullivan RBI single and a Sheff sacrifice fly, respectively, accounted for all three runs in the contest.
Castro had his unbeaten run of five starts snapped, falling to 4-3 while going four innings and allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Logan Saloman was a bright spot for Nevada (17-13, 6-5 MW) in relief, striking out three over four scoreless innings.
Nevada's lineup could not crack Mercurius, however, as the Rebel starter found a groove in retiring 11 in a row from the end of the third inning until
Junhyuk Kwon's one-out single in the seventh. Mercurius then retired the next seven to wrap up the contest.
