LAS VEGAS – Nevada Men's Tennis lost its semifinal match against top-seeded Boise State at the Mountain West Championships, 4-3. The Pack came within two points of upsetting the 42
nd-ranked Broncos. Senior
Youssef Kadiri won his final match for the Wolf Pack, his 27
th win of the season, tying the program single-season record for singles victories.
Â
Unlike the regular season match between Nevada and Boise State, the Broncos dominated the doubles session. Jett Middleton and Carson Baker cruised to a 6-1 victory over Kadiri and
Lucas Hammond, double-breaking the Pack duo to start the match. On court three, Idriss Haddouch and James Van Herzeele broke the Pack in its last service game to win 6-3 against
Max Contet and
Rayen Hermassi.
Â
Boise State took a 2-0 lead with Haddouch's dominant 6-1, 6-2 win on court five against Contet. Haddouch double-broke Contet in each set.
Â
Hammond scored the first point for the Pack, tying his season series against Baker with a pair of breaks in the first set and three straight game wins, including two breaks to clinch a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The Broncos regained their two-point lead with Lukas Velik's 6-4, 7-5 win on court three against
Rayen Hermassi.
Â
The Pack began a comeback bid with Kadiri's record-tying win over No. 121 Middleton on court one. After an unfinished match earlier in the season against Middleton, Kadiri got his win over the Broncos' top player, earning his third ranked win of the season. Kadiri broke Middleton to start the match and again to take a 4-1 lead. Kadiri would close out the first set 6-3. Kadiri then erased a 4-0 deficit in the second set tiebreaker, winning seven of the next nine points to defeat Middleton, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Â
Greg Valente tied the dual with his 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory on court six. Valente netted a break from the first set over John Chin, then held serve all the way through the second set, before taking a 6-0 lead in the tiebreaker, having six match points and ultimately winning the tiebreaker 7-3.
Â
Boise State spoiled the Pack's upset with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win by Van Herzeele over
Rémy Trégourès. Van Herzeele dominated the first set, winning 6-2 in the opening frame. Trégourès overcame a break to open the second set, then broke Van Herzeele late in the second set to win 6-4. In the third set, Trégourès broke Van Herzeele and held serve to take a 5-3 lead. Trégourès came the closest to victory in the ninth game of the final set, at 30 all, just two points away from a Pack upset victory. Instead, Van Herzeele held serve and broke Trégourès to tie 5-5. Van Herzeele held serve again and took a love-40 lead with four match points. Trégourès fought back to force a deciding point, looking to force a tiebreaker for the match; however, an awkward shot from Van Herzeele for Trégourès to hit long, winning the match for Boise State.
