RENO, Nev. – Nevada Women's Tennis finished the regular season with a 4-1 win over New Mexico, breaking the program record for wins in a season with 17.
On senior day, Nevada passed the 1991-92 Big Sky Championship team's mark of 16 wins. Finishing 8-2 in conference play, the Pack placed second in the conference, its highest regular season finish since 2009-10.
Before the historic victory, the Pack honored
Lou-Anne Guerbert during a senior day ceremony. Guerbert was joined by university president, Brian Sandoval, and first lady Lauralyn Sandoval as the first lady presented the Lauralyn McCarthy Sandoval '92 Women's Tennis Scholarship to Guerbert.
The Pack's got off to a dominant start in doubles.
Marlene Foerster and
Silvia-Maria Costache cruised by Maud Vandeputte and Coumba Ben Niangadou, 6-1, in the top-flight match. Amahée Charrier and
Kennedy Robinson clinched the early point for the Pack with their 6-3 win against Sarah O'Connor and Maria Sodre.
Wiem Boubaker and
Petra Janigova were within a game of winning on court three when the doubles session was abandoned; they held a 5-3 lead over Maria Matsoukatidi and Sofia Taborga.
Guerbert's senior day match went awry as Sodre ran away with the match, 6-0, 6-2.
Outside of Sodre's win, the Pack led the other five singles matches from early on. Silvia-Maria won her third straight singles match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Niangadou on court four.
Foerster dominated her first set, defeating O'Connor 6-0 in the opening frame. Foerster and O'Connor battled back and forth in the second set, breaking each other to force a tiebreaker, which Foerster would go on to win 7-4.
Janigova closed out the Wolf Pack victory with a strong second-set comeback to defeat Allison Romero, 6-2, 6-3.
Charrier led the top-flight match against Vandeputte 6-4, 5-4 when Janigova clinched the match. Robinson won her opening set 6-1, but saw Taborga come back to win the second set, 6-4, just before Janigova's clinch.
Nevada now heads to Las Vegas looking to add a conference championship to its record-breaking season. The Pack finished the regular season in second place outright, earning a bye to the conference championship quarterfinal. As the two-seed, Nevada will take on the winner of #7 Air Force and #10 New Mexico.
