Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park
WP: Eric Valdez (3-0)
LP: Win Scott (4-2)
RENO, Nev. - Nevada bounced back Sunday afternoon, avoiding a sweep at the hands of San José State with a 12-2, seven-inning win at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Trailing 2-0 after three innings, Nevada's offense came alive in a big way. The Wolf Pack (20-15, 8-7 MW) scored three times in the fourth to take the lead, took control with four in the fifth, then put the game in 10-run-rule territory with a five-spot in the sixth.
The Pack also got things done with its legs, stealing a season-high seven bases against the Spartans.
Back-to-back-to-back RBI singles with two out in the fourth from
Sean Yamaguchi,
Jackson Waller, and
Taylor Holder woke up the Nevada bats and put the Pack in front, 3-2.
An inning later, Yamaguchi started things up again, driving in
Mason Hirata with a one-out single. After a double steal put
Jayce Dobie at third and Yamaguchi at second,
Jacob Doyle lined a single to left-center to plate them both. Two batters later, with Doyle at second, Waller drove him in to make it 7-3.
Waller led the Wolf Pack with four RBIs in a 3-for-4 day, while Yamaguchi, Dobie, and
Billy Ham each had two RBIs.
After yet another double steal put runners at second and third with none out in the sixth, Dobie drove in Hirata to open the scoring in the sixth. A few batters later, with the bases loaded and one out, Ham smoked a two-run double to right-center, putting the Pack up 10-2. Once again, it was Waller with a run-scoring single, driving in Yamaguchi and Ham with a line drive through the right side.
Eric Valdez picked up his third win by handling the final three innings in relief. Valdez shutout the Spartans in the seventh to put a one-hour, 59-minute game to bed.
Nevada starter
Casey Burfield went four innings, giving up two runs on four hits before Valdez took over to start the fourth and kept the Spartans off the board the rest of the way.
Win Scott fell to 4-2 for San José State (4-2), charged with seven runs on eight hits. Reliever Luca Staiano came on for Scott in the fifth and worked into the sixth, giving up five runs on five hits.
Nevada closes the home stand Monday at 3:05 p.m. against San Francisco.
