Pack loses heartbreaker to Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – Nevada Women's Tennis lost its final away match of the regular season 4-3 to Fresno State, falling in a third-set tiebreaker in the deciding singles match.

The Pack got out to a strong start, dominating the doubles session. Wiem Boubaker and Petra Janigova broke serve twice against Sofia Pizzoni and Paulina Montiel twice on court three, leading to a 6-1 victory. Amahée Charrier and Kennedy Robinson also won two breaks over their opponents, Charlotte Gisclon and Klara Vukiceic, winning 6-2. Silvia-Maria Costache and Marlene Foerster led in the top-flight match, 5-2, when the session was abandoned.

Nevada looked to be in control of the singles session as well, winning four of the first sets. Charrier, Foerster, Costache, and Robinson all took one-set leads to begin their respective matches. Pizzoni was one of two Fresno State players to take a lead and the only one to capitalize on it in a two-set victory, defeating Lou-Anne Guerbert, 6-3, 6-2.

Costache retook the lead for the Pack. After a 6-2 first set win over Gisclon, Costache finished out the court four match with a 6-4 second-set victory.

The remaining four matches went to a third set. Charrier gave Nevada a 3-1 lead with her 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory against Magrini.

The Bulldogs' comeback began with a victory on court two, when Yinglak Jittakoat won sets two and three, each 7-5. After Foerster's first set 7-5 win, Jittakoat won the match 5-7, 7-5, 7-5. Andjela Lopicic was the second Bulldog to win the first set, but lost her second set to Boubaker before sweeping the final set to win 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

Court six determined the match. After Robinson won the first set 7-5, Montiel began her comeback, winning the second set 6-3 and taking a 5-4 lead in the third set. Robinson fought back twice to force a tiebreaker, which Montiel would go on to win, clinching the match for Fresno State.

Nevada returns home for its final two matches of the regular season. The Pack hosts San Jose State on Sunday at noon, a key matchup for both teams in the pursuit of a Mountain West Championship.
