SAN JOSE – Nevada Softball dropped its series opener against San José State, falling to the Spartans 4-0. A four-run sixth inning propelled San José State to a Friday night win.
Â
The game was scoreless through five innings, with each team having its fair share of opportunities before the defense found its way out of the jam. In the first two innings, both Nevada and San José State started innings with two on and no outs before three straight outs killed the rallies.
Â
The Spartans cracked the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of walks to lead off the inning. Shay McDowell tripled to empty the bases and put San José State up 2-0. Then, Aneesa Almaguer singled to center to score McDowell. With the bases loaded, Aubrie Thomas singled up the middle, moving runners from station to station and scoring the Spartans' fourth run.
Â
Nevada went three up, three down in the top of the seventh, unable to get the ball out of the infield.
Â
Hailey McLean took the loss, giving up all four runs on four hits. McLean walked three batters and hit one while striking out two.
Jessica McPartland relieved McLean with one out in the sixth inning, giving up one hit and walking a batter in her 0.2 innings in the circle.
Â
Offensively, the middle infielders were the only bright spots in the Pack's lineup, as
Madison Clark finished with a pair of singles and a stolen base. Shortstop
Haylee Engelbrecht extended her hit streak to six games with a double, getting aboard via a walk.
Aaliyah Jenkins also reached twice, getting hit by two pitches, extending her on-base streak to 14 games, her second 14-game streak of the season.
Â
Game two of the series is set for 3 p.m. tomorrow back at the Spartan Softball Complex.
