Â
FRESNO, Calif. – Nevada Softball split day one of the Bulldog Classic with a doubleheader against the Saint Mary's Gaels. After dropping the first game, the Pack rebounded as
Ainsley Berlingeri pitched a shutout for a 2-0 win.
Â
Saint Mary's 3, Nevada 1
The Gaels got on the board first, scoring a run after a hit batter and a triple to right field. Saint Mary's added to its lead in the fourth inning, doubling to left centerfield to score a batter who reached via a walk. The next batter singled up the middle to score the previous double.
Â
Nevada's bats went quiet throughout the middle of the game as 10 straight Wolf Pack hitters were retired from the third to sixth innings.
Â
The Pack's lone run came in a late comeback attempt as
Tatum Maytorena hit her fourth triple of the season, putting her in the top 10 nationally in three-baggers.
Haylee Engelbrecht flied out to left, scoring Maytorena. A pair of pinch hitters weren't able to muster up any more offense for the Pack.
Â
Hailey McLean got the start for Nevada and took the loss, just her second of the year. McLean pitched 3.2 innings, striking out five, and giving up four hits while walking one and hitting two batters. Three runs, all earned, were charged to McLean.
Â
Tess Bumiller pitched 3.1 innings in relief, only allowing two hits and a walk. She struck out two Gaels without allowing a run.
Â
Nevada 2, Saint Mary's 0
Wolf Pack pitching rebounded in game two, as Berlingeri recorded her first career shutout and the first individual shutout of the year for the Nevada staff. Berlingeri went the full seven, allowing four hits and issuing four free passes via walks and hit batters.
Â
Both pitchers dominated the early innings, with the only runs of the game being scored in the sixth inning. Neither team could string together hits with two innings going six-up-six-down.
Â
Nevada finally broke through in the sixth inning when
Aaliyah Jenkins singled with two outs before immediately stealing second.
Hannah Di Genova got her team-high third hit of the day, scoring Jenkins. Maytorena followed with a double to score Di Genova and give the Pack a 2-0 lead.
Â
Berlingeri's shutout was in question in the bottom of the seventh as the Gaels loaded the bases thanks to a walk and a pair of hit batters. However, a 4-6 fielder's choice ended any hopes of a Saint Mary's comeback, locking up the Wolf Pack win.
Â
The Wolf Pack lineup was to be noted in game two.
Matlyn Leetch started at second base, the first game of the season in which
Madison Clark didn't start at second; she was the designated player for Nevada. Maytorena also made her first appearance in centerfield, as
Bailie Clark did not start for the first time, but appeared as a pinch runner. Finally,
Haylee Engelbrecht did not start but got a pinch hit at bat.
Saige Alfaro started at shortstop, the first time Engelbrecht didn't start at short this season.
Â
Di Genova, Jenkins, and Maytorena were the only batters to record multiple hits on the day.
Â
The Pack finished up the Bulldog Classic tomorrow with a doubleheader against Pacific, starting at 9 a.m. with game two slated for 11:30 a.m.
