DAVIS, Calif. - Nevada suffered a hard-luck defeat Wednesday night at UC Davis, seeing a potential game-tying extra-base hit robbed by a sliding catch late in a 3-1 decision.
Nevada (14-10) trailed, 2-0, in the seventh but had two on with two out and
Donovan Ratfield at the plate. Ratfield drilled a Matt Barnes offering into the alley in left-center, but Aggie centerfielder Tyler Howard extended on the slide and made the defensive play of the game, keeping the Wolf Pack in its two-run hole.
It was the Wolf Pack's best chance of the night. UC Davis (12-10) tacked on an insurance run in its half of the seventh, and only
Nate Snakenborg's solo shot in the eighth kept Nevada from being shut out.
Five UC Davis pitchers combined to strike out 15 Nevada batters, led by nine from starter Ned Frutchey, who went five scoreless to pick up his first win.
On the other side,
Jayce Dobie struck out three and allowed just four hits over four innings, but was saddled with his second loss due to a wind-aided play in the second.
With two out and runners at first and second, Dobie got Jason Hanson to pop up to the right side of the infield. Nevada second baseman
Jack Metcho prepared to settle under the pop fly, but the windy conditions pushed the ball beyond his reach and it fell safely, allowing Evan Gentil to come across with the opening run.
The Aggies capitalized in the next at-bat, as Zach Story slashed a double down the line in left, scoring Houston Hirschkorn to double the lead.
Frutchey and reliever Braydon Woolridge combined to retire 18-straight Nevada batters from the last out of the first to the first two outs of the sixth until a
Michael Ball single. Ball's single combined with Snakenborg's homer and three hits from
Jackson Waller provided the Wolf Pack's five hits on the night.
Nevada returns to Reno and to Mountain West play this weekend, hosting Washington State for three games beginning Friday night at 6:05 p.m.
