DAVIS, Calif. – Nevada Softball closed the Capital Classic in Davis with a pair of wins, finishing the weekend undefeated and improving to 16-4, surpassing last season's 15-5 mark through 20 games.
Â
Aaliyah Jenkins led the Pack with five hits on the day with a double and an RBI.
Haley Painter hit her ninth home run of the season in game two, the 30
th of her career.
Â
Nevada 6, Santa Clara 2
Nevada opened with a huge inning, scoring five runs, including the winning run after just the fifth batter of the game.
Bailie Clark walked and stole second base to start the game for the second game in a row. Painter then knocked in Clark with a single to left field for the Pack's first run of the inning. Jenkins and
Hannah Di Genova each followed with their own singles to score the previous batter, giving Nevada a 3-0 lead.
Â
Tatum Maytorena continued the inning, singling to right center and moving Di Genova to third base, allowing
Haylee Engelbrecht to score Di Genova on a sacrifice fly, lining out to the centerfielder. The Wolf Pack's big inning game to a close with
Matlyn Leetch singling to left field and scoring Maytorena.
Â
Hailey McLean started her eighth win of the season with a pair of looking strikeouts. McLean would go on to pitch five innings allowing three hits and just one run while striking out six batters. McLean's season ERA sits at 1.47 after 13 appearances and 57.0 innings pitched.
Â
Santa Clara's relief pitcher, Hazyl Gray, was able to stop the bleeding for a while, spreading out any hits or walks allowed to stall the Wolf Pack's scoring during her 2.2 innings.
Â
Nevada had a big opportunity to nail the game down in the third inning with the bases loaded following an Engelbrecht walk, Leetch single, and B. Clark walk. The Pack came up short ending the inning with a ground out.
Â
The Broncos scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth as Taryn Clements sent a fly ball over the left field fence, ruining McLean's three-strikeout inning. Santa Clara got another run in the sixth inning with a single scoring a runner from second.
Â
Nevada's offense finally got back on the board in the seventh inning. Jenkins led off the inning with a double to right field and moving over to third on a ground out. Maytorena finished the job with a single through the right side, scoring Jenkins.
Â
Santa Clara looked to get something going in the bottom of the seventh with a lead-off double, but
Tess Bumiller locked down the inning not allowing the ball out of the infield to finish the game. Bumiller pitched two innings to finish the game for the Pack.
Â
Jenkins finished the game with three hits and an RBI, scoring twice. Painter, Di Genova, Maytorena, and Leetch all had two-hit games.
Bella Tonso made her collegiate debut catching for Bumiller in the final two innings. Tonso was due to bat in the seventh inning before a double play ended the opportunity.
Â
Nevada 5, UC Davis 2
The Pack scored in the first inning again in game two. Leetch was promoted to the lead-off spot, reaching in her first at-bat thanks to a throwing error by the Aggies. Jenkins singled and another Aggie error set up the Pack with the bases loaded. Maytorena singled up the middle scoring Leetch and Jenkins.
Â
Jessica McPartland started her day with a strikeout and two groundouts, the first of four straight three-up-three-down innings in her stellar outing.
Â
In the second inning, Leetch took a four-pitch walk, followed by a pair of balls to Painter. The next good pitch was too good for Painter, as she homered to left field, putting the Pack up 4-0.
Â
Nevada's offense stalled for a few innings, only getting two base runners in the middle three innings, but McPartland continued to be great in the circle. McPartland carried a perfect game into the fifth inning striking out four and getting five groundouts before the Aggies got a hit. McPartland's perfect bid came to an end after Rylee Reeves led off the fifth with a single.
Â
The Aggies capitalized on the lost perfecto, doubling to score Reeves and scoring a second run off a Gia Felice single.
Â
Nevada found themselves in another bases-loaded situation in the sixth inning. Leetch hit a sac fly to left field to score Engelbrecht, the final run of the game.
Â
Ainsley Berlingeri finished the game for Nevada, allowing just one hit which was erased by a 5-4-3 double play. Berlingeri faced just the minimum six batters in two innings, striking out two.
Â
Eight different batters got a hit in the win, Jenkins the only one with a pair. Leetch stood out offensively for Nevada, going one-for-two with a sac fly and a walk, scoring twice. Maytorena finished the day with three hits and three RBI, tied with Painter for the RBI team lead on the day.
Â
Nevada heads to Fresno next week for the Bulldog Classic where the Pack will play a pair of weekend doubleheaders. Saturday sees Nevada take on Saint Mary's at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The Wolf Pack will then play Pacific at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
