Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park
WP: Michael Riley (2-0)
LP: Alessandro Castro (0-2)
RENO, Nev. - CSU Bakersfield scored five times in the first inning, and the hole proved too deep for Nevada as the Wolf Pack fell, 16-2, in Saturday's second game of the four-game series.
The teams, with a game apiece in the series, continue with the third contest Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
After a game-opening groundout, the Roadrunners had their next seven batters reach safely against Nevada starter
Alessandro Castro to open up a 5-0 lead. Brock Perreira, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs on the day, opened the scoring with an RBI single. Louis Zulaica doubled down the line in right to drive in two and make it 3-0, then RBI singles from Noah Alvarez and Elijah Pelayo capped the scoring in the frame.
Nevada got one back in the bottom half on
Taylor Holder's RBI single, but the start of the inning foreshadowed something which would haunt the Pack Saturday. After
Junhyuk Kwon was hit by a pitch to lead off, the Roadrunners induced a double-play ball from
Sean Yamaguchi—it would be the first of four double plays CSU Bakersfield turned in the contest.
Castro settled down after the first, retiring 10-straight batters into the fifth, but double plays stifled any potential Wolf Pack rally. Nevada had the leadoff batter reach safely in the first, second, and fifth innings, and CSU Bakersfield snuffed out that runner with a double play every time.
Nevada's best opportunity to get back into the game came in the fifth, when an error, single, and a walk loaded the bases with one out. But, facing reliever Michael Riley, the Wolf Pack failed to get a run across as Riley struck out Holder then got
Jackson Waller to ground to short.
The Roadrunners put it away with five runs in the sixth, started by a Tyler Leroy two-run double. Leroy would lead the Roadrunners with five RBIs in a 3-for-5 day.
Castro took his second loss of the season, giving up five runs over 4.1 innings. Riley, who came on in the fifth, got the win with three scoreless innings of relief.
Jayce Dobie went 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch to lead the Wolf Pack at the plate, while
Michael Ball was 2-for-4.
