HOUSTON -Â Nevada swimmers and divers captured six medals on the second night of the Mountain West Championships Thursday.
Enkhkhuslen Batbayar picked up her team-leading second and third medals of the meet, capturing silver in the 500 free and a second relay bronze, this time with the 400 medley relay. Her first medal of the meet came Wednesday night with the Wolf Pack's 800 free relay.
Diver
Bailey Heydra took silver on 3-Meter Springboard, adding that to her gold on 1-Meter Wednesday.
Scarlett Ferris twice lowered her Nevada 50 free record, culminating in a 22.26 while earning silver in the event, and was part of Thursday's 400 medley relay which captured bronze in the night's finale.
Keira-Lee Allot each added their second medals, as well, finishing 2-3 in the 500 free final. Both swimmers were part of Wednesday's bronze medal-winning 800 free relay.
The night opened with Batbayar and Allott in the 500 free final. Batbayar and Wyoming Macey Hansen led a tight pack from the start, and would slug it out from start to finish. Allott, meanwhile, started out fifth after the first 50 yards before climbing her way into third by the halfway point. Less than half a second separated Hansen in first from Allott in third after 250 yards, but Hansen stubbornly held on and gradually extended her lead to just over a second over Batbayar ahead of the final 50 yards. Batbayar would in turn hold off Allott for silver, with Allott holding off UNLV's Ava Olson for bronze.
Batbayar's and Allott's times of 4:44.32 and 4:46.10 moved up to second and fourth, respectively, in Nevada's record book.
After lowering her 50 free record set in January by swimming a 22.57 in Thursday's prelims, Ferris dug even deeper for the final. The sophomore lowered her mark for the second time in a day with a blazing 22.26, good for the silver behind Washington State's Darcy Revitt, with teammate
Abby Parks taking seventh in 22.76.
The 400 medley relay of Ferris,
Sara Mihalic,
Yasmin Perry, and Enkhkhuslen got off to a strong start on Ferris' lead leg, before coming back to the field. Perry handed off a solid butterfly leg to Enkhkhuslen, who picked up her third medal of the meet by bringing the anchor leg home for bronze.
Although denied a second diving gold of the meet, the Wolf Pack duo of
Bailey Heydra and
Lucia Gabino rallied to take the second and third spots on the podium thanks to clutch late dives. Battling with San Diego State's Valentina Lopez Arevalo over the six rounds of finals, Heydra and Gabino each stumbled in the third round, giving Arevalo the cushion which led to eventual gold.
Needing to fight back into medal contention, Heydra bounced right back into the top three with a 63.00 on her fourth dive, and posted an incredible 64.40 on her final dive to secure the silver, her second medal of the meet. Gabino, meanwhile, gave herself a shot at the podium with a score of 60.75 on her fifth dive, then coolly dropped a 61.50 score on her final dive to edge Air Force's Chloe Perkins for bronze by 1.90 points.
The Wolf Pack will return to CRWC Natatorium for Friday's third day of the meet. Scheduled for Friday morning's prelims at 8:30 a.m. PT are the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back, with Ferris aiming for a repeat Mountain West title in the latter.
