LP: Peyton Fosher (0-1)
BERKELEY, Calif. - Nevada dropped Friday's 2025 opener at California, falling 14-1 as the Golden Bears broke it open with eight runs in the seventh.
Cal capitalized on an error, a walk, and a single to load the bases against reliever
Caedon Kottinger to start the frame.
Dominic Desch came on in relief, and gave up an RBI single to PJ Moutzouridis then a two-run base hit to Max Handron, as Cal upped its lead to 6-1. Jacob French plated Moutzouridis with a third RBI single off of Desch, then, a couple batters later, pinch-runner Elijah Clayton scored on a wild pitch from
Jake Cumming, the third Nevada pitcher of the inning. Cade Campbell closed the inning's scoring with a three-run homer.
It was a disappointing end to what was a career outing for Wolf Pack starter
Peyton Fosher. Fosher went five and a third innings, striking out a career-high nine batters while giving up three runs on six hits. Despite the strong start, he fell to 0-1 with the decision.
Fosher had surrendered only two runs through five innings before Nevada got on the board with
Junhyuk Kwon's opposite-field, solo homer in the top of the sixth.
Nevada was held to just four hits and went down on strikes 15 times against a quartet of Cal pitchers. Starter Austin Turkington struck out four over three scoreless innings, while David Shaw was credited with the win by tossing the next three innings, striking out seven while giving up just two hits, including Kwon's homer. Spencer Dessart and Tucker Bougie combined to close the final three innings.
Five Golden Bear batters had two hits in the contest, with Campbell's three RBIs leading five players with at least two runs driven in.
The teams play the second game of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
