Berkeley, Calif. - Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium
BERKELEY, Calif. - For the second time in as many days, Nevada Baseball was done in by a crooked number put up by its opponent. Saturday, it was a seven-run first inning for California which carried the Golden Bears to an 11-3 win over the Wolf Pack in Berkeley.
Cal's first five batters of the game reached safely against Nevada starter
Alessandro Castro, with two singles and a Wolf Pack fielding error loading the bases and setting up a two-run single from Dominic Smaldino to open up the scoring.
Jacob French re-loaded the bases with another single, and two batters later, Castro forced in a third run by hitting Ryan Tayman. Cade Campbell, who hit a three-run homer Friday night, again did the damage, clearing the bases with a double down the line in left to make it 6-0 Golden Bears. Jarren Advincula doubled in Campbell to wrap the scoring in the frame, and spell the end of the day for Castro, who gave up seven runs (five earned) on six hits over two-thirds of an inning.
Nevada's bats were held mostly silent again Saturday. Cal starter Gavin Eddy and reliever Cole Clark combined to limit the Wolf Pack to five hits, although
Jayce Dobie went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in his Nevada debut. Clark went the final five innings, giving up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts to pick up the win.
Campbell added a solo homer in the sixth for Cal, finishing the day 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Smaldino also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs for the Golden Bears.
Wolf Pack reliever
Ryan Oakes went four and a third innings, giving up just two runs and striking out two.
Nevada's effort to get a split of the series starts with Sunday's 1 p.m. contest.
