Nevada women's basketball drops road game to Portland

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Nevada women's basketball finished the Portland Invitational falling to the host Pilots on Saturday, 65-52.

Skylar Durley led both teams in scoring with a season-high 20 points. Makayla Carter also had a season-high night with nine points and nine rebounds.

Free throws continued to be Nevada's Achilles heel, going 13-for-24 on the night. Foul trouble also plagued both teams, as Nevada was whistled for 22 fouls and Portland 21.

The first quarter was nearly even in several categories as each team was trying to find its rhythm. The Pilots had 11 rebounds while the Pack had nine, and each team recorded three assists with four turnovers. Nevada out shot Portland 43.8 percent to 41.2 percent, but trailed 20-16 after the opening quarter.

The second quarter proved to be the point that hurt the Pack, falling into a 15-point hole, which it cut to 13 before the break, 38-25. Nevada missed its first eight shots of the quarter, allowing the Pilots to score 10-straight points and extend its lead to 14 at 30-16.

The Pack had its best quarter in the third, shooting 66.7 percent from the paint and holding the Pilots to just over 31 percent. Durley led the rally, going 3-for-3 from inside. Nevada cut Portland's lead to nine, 54-45, heading into the final quarter.

Momentum faltered for the Pack in the fourth, shooting under 17 percent. The double-digit deficit was too much for Nevada to overcome after only scoring seven points in the final 10.

The Pack will have a week of rest before heading to the Briann January Classic hosted by Arizona State next weekend. Nevada takes on San Francisco on December 5 at 3 p.m., followed by McNeese State on December 6 at 11 a.m.
