RENO, Nev. — Under the lights at Mackay Stadium, Nevada Women's Soccer secured its first Mountain West Conference win of the season with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Grand Canyon University (GCU) on Thursday night. The win also marks Nevada's first triumph over GCU since the Lopes joined the Mountain West earlier this year.
The opening half was a defensive chess match, with both teams trading possession and chances but unable to break through. The scoreboard remained locked at 0-0 heading into halftime.
Momentum shifted in the second half when Jasmine Navarro broke the deadlock in the 59th minute, finishing a well-placed ball to give the Pack the lead. Her goal energized the home crowd and tilted the momentum in Nevada's favor.
The drama peaked in the 85th minute, when GCU was awarded a penalty kick. Nevada goalkeeper Mia Collins delivered a clutch save, diving to her left to deny the equalizer and preserve the lead. Her heroics sealed the Pack's first conference win and capped off a gritty team performance.
Nevada improves to 1-1-1 in Mountain West play and will look to carry momentum into Sunday's road match up against Wyoming.
