Wolf Pack ink two transfers for 2024-25 season

RENO, Nev. - Nevada Women's Tennis announced a pair of transfers for the upcoming season. Incoming juniors Siliva-Maria Costache and Doga Akyurek bring experience and depth to the 2024-25 Wolf Pack roster.

A native of Bucharest, Romania, Costache joins Nevada after two seasons in Lawrence, Kansas with the Jayhawks. At Kansas, Costache played in the lower half of the lineup, primarily in the sixth flight.

Across two years with the Jayhawks, Costache was 23-21 in singles play with a 13-15 doubles record. Costache made the majority of her dual doubles appearances in the third flight.

Costache had a stellar fall season during her sophomore year, posting a 12-6 record through five tournaments including a 3-0 weekend at the SMU Invitational. Costache also recorded a three-win weekend at the UTSA Intercollegiate championships.

Costache was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2023.

The Pack's second transfer, Akyurek, remains on the West Coast, coming from Long Beach State. Originally from Izmir, Turkey, Akyurek will also come to Nevada as a junior after spending two seasons with Long Beach State. The 5' 7" right-hander went 16-13 for the Beach in her sophomore season, including a 10-8 record in dual play. Akyurek played up and down the Long Beach State lineup, ranging from flight two through five. In doubles play, Akyurek played solely in the second flight with a pair of partners, going 8-8 in dual play and 17-13 overall.

In the fall, Akyurek matched up against two members of the Pack with strong performances in both matches. Akyurek defeated Anastasia Luneva, 6-4, 6-4 and lost to Marlene Foerster in a third set tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

In her freshman season at Long Beach State, Akyurek went 11-10 with a 4-1 conference record. Akyurek won her respective singles bracket at the 2022 Long Beach State Fall Invitational. Akyurek won her singles match against Cal State Fullerton in the Big West quarterfinal.

Prior to her collegiate career, Akyurek competed at youth National Team Tournaments for Turkey as well as in the U16 European Junior Championship. In 2019, Akyurek competed in the ISF championship, becoming a world champion for Turkey.

Head coach Guillaume Tonelli spoke on the depth Costache and Akyurek bring to the team, saying "They will bring an era of excellence and competitiveness to the court. With their proven track records of success and remarkable skill sets, their energy will help everyone strive for greatness. Silvia being from Romania, and Doga coming to us from Turkey, both being juniors will bring maturity and sophistication to complete the team. They have played at the highest level internationally, and their tennis knowledge will definitely take us to the next level in the conference. We are very happy to have them join the Wolf Pack family."

The Wolf Pack will return five of their six primary singles players, keeping the depth that allowed for the team's best conference finish under head coach Tonelli. The bolstered roster will look to improve upon the team's 11-9 overall record, post the team's second-straight conference record above .500, and continue home dominance following a 5-0 season at McArthur Tennis Center.
