FRESNO, Calif. - Nevada could not avert a weekend sweep at Fresno State, Sunday, as the Bulldogs broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning and went on to a 16-3, seven-inning win.
The Wolf Pack (12-16, 7-7 MW) return to Reno, set to host San José State Friday-Sunday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Sunday, the Pack twice took a one-run lead in the early innings, but could not hold Fresno State back.
Jesse Pierce's sacrifice fly in the first got the Pack on the board, but the Bulldogs answered with one in the bottom half.
JR Freethy made it 2-1 with a solo homer in the third, but a sacrifice fly from Triston Gray and an RBI double from Ben Newton erased the lead and put Fresno in front, 3-2.
Taylor Holder hit a solo homer of his own to lead off the fourth, tying the game at 3-3, but Fresno State exploded for seven runs in response. Justin Stransky led off the bottom half with a solo shot off of Nevada starter
Peyton Fosher, putting the Bulldogs in front by a run, then, after a one-out walk, the lead doubled with Rico Peppi's two-run homer.
The Bulldogs went on to add four more runs against relievers
Zach Garber and
Dominic Desch, taking a 10-3 lead after four.
Nevada had one more chance to cut into the lead in the fifth. A one-out
Jake Harvey double and walks to Freethy and Ball loaded the bases, but Aidan Cremarosa got Pierce to fly out and Holder to foul out to first to end the threat.
Tommy Hopfe led off the Bulldog fifth with a home run, and Saldivar added a two-run double as Fresno State put five across. A run in the sixth made it 16-3, and the game was over by run-rule after the Pack went down scoreless in the top of the seventh.
Peyton Fosher fell to 2-2 with the loss for Nevada, giving up six runs on six hits over 3.2 innings. Cremarosa got the win in relief, his first decision of the season holding the Pack hitless and scoreless over the final 2.2 innings.
