Wolf Pack routs Spartans in series opener

Nevada 18, San José State 4
Friday, April 12, 2024
Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park

WP: Jason Doktorczyk (4-2)
LP: Nolan George (2-1)

RENO, Nev. - Nevada could not have asked for a better response after suffering a three-game sweep in Fresno last weekend. The Wolf Pack belted out 15 hits, including two home runs, and scored a season-high 18 runs in Friday's 18-4 rout of San José State at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.

Jackson Waller led the charge, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, a two-run homer, and four RBIs. Jesse Pierce also had three hits, capping his night with a grand slam in Nevada's nine-run eighth inning, and Michael Ball was the third Wolf Pack hitter with a three-hit night, all doubles, and driving in three runs.

Waller got the Pack out to a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the third, then put Nevada (13-16, 8-7 MW) ahead for good with a two-run shot to left in the fifth.

It was all Nevada starter Jason Doktorczyk needed. The Wolf Pack ace was back in form Friday night, matching his career high with 12 strikeouts over seven innings, giving up just two runs (one earned) on five hits to improve to 4-2.

San José State starter Nolan George kept the Spartans (12-22, 7-9 MW) close until running into trouble in the sixth. Taylor Holder led off the frame with a triple to right-center, chasing George from the contest. Reliever Ethan Ross fared little better, giving up an RBI single to Ball, then another, this one with two outs, to Waller, upping the Pack lead to 5-2.

George would fall to 2-1 on the year, giving up four runs on five hits over five-plus innings.

Nevada opened things up even more in the seventh against a second Spartan reliever, Joey Cammarata. Derek Tenney forced in a run by being hit with the bases loaded, and Holder scored on a wild pitch. Jake Harvey added an RBI single up the middle, then Justin Acal legged out a fielder's choice to short, capping Nevada's four-run inning to make it 9-2.

The Wolf Pack sent 13 batters to the plate against three Spartan pitchers in its nine-run eighth, highlighted by Pierce's grand slam and a couple of RBI doubles from Ball.

Nevada will get its first chance to capture the series in Saturday's 2:05 p.m. contest.
