Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park
WP: Ethan Ross (3-5)
LP: Peyton Fosher (2-3)
SV: Jesse Gutierrez (1)
RENO, Nev. - Nevada's bats were held in check Sunday, and the Wolf Pack missed an opportunity to sweep San José State, falling 6-3 in the finale at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Nevada hosts No. 5 Oregon State in midweek action, taking on the Beavers Tuesday and Wednesday nights. First pitch each night is set for 6:05 p.m.
Sunday, the Wolf Pack (14-17, 9-8 MW) loaded the bases with two away in both the fourth and sixth innings, but came away empty-handed each time.
Bryce Matthews' pinch-hit RBI double and a two-run homer from
Jake Harvey in the ninth proved to little, too late as the rally fell short.
In the fourth, with the sacks full and the Pack threatening the Spartans' 1-0 lead,
Justin Acal scorched a line drive but right into the glove of Spartan third baseman Nathan Cadena.
The Spartans (13-23, 8-10 MW) capitalized in the top half of the sixth, putting two on with two out, setting up Matt Spear's three-run, opposite-field homer off of Pack starter
Peyton Fosher.
The long ball opened up a 4-0 lead for San José State starter Ethan Ross, who put together one of his best starts of the season to improve to 3-5. Ross struck out eight and held the Pack to just three hits, none for extra bases, over six innings. He would close his outing by getting out of another bases-loaded situation in the sixth, getting
Derek Tenney looking to keep the Spartans' four-run lead intact.
San José State put it out of reach in the eighth with Theo Hardy's two-run homer to right. Reliever Jesse Gutierrez picked up his first save of the season, going the final three innings.
Fosher fell to 2-3 on the year with the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings.
Nolan Wilson's ninth-inning double was the Pack's only extra-base hit Sunday.
