Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park
WP: Tyler Mejia (2-0)
LP: Easton Marks (2-3)
RENO, Nev. - Miscues cost Nevada a shot at an upset of No. 4 Oregon State Tuesday night at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. The Wolf Pack committed six errors, leading to seven unearned runs for the Beavers as Oregon State took the opener, 12-5.
The first three of those unearned runs came thanks to two Nevada errors in the top of the second. Dallas Macias reached on a fielding error by
Michael Ball to lead off the frame, but Wolf Pack starter
Easton Marks appeared poised to escape, getting Wilson Weber to fly out before Elijah Hainline hit a tailor-made double-play ball to
Jesse Pierce at first. Pierce touched first, but his throw to second caromed off Macias' helmet and into left field, the throwing error keeping the inning alive.
Oregon State (30-5) pounced immediately. Macias stole home for the opening run, then, after a walk to Brady Kasper, Jacob Krieg hit a two-run homer to left, making it 3-0.
Nevada (14-18) fought back with a second-inning solo shot from
Jackson Waller, and a two-run homer to center from
Taylor Holder in the fifth, making it a one-run game at 5-4.
But this time, Oregon State handled things with the bats, again beginning with Macias, who singled to lead of the sixth. Weber doubled and Hainline walked, loading the bases and spelling the end of the night for Marks. Reliever
Clayton Ray struck out Kasper, but Krieg delivered the killshot, clearing the bases with a double down the line in right to make it 8-4. The Beavers added a run before the end of the frame, upping the lead to 9-4.
Oregon State added three more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Marks would fall to 2-3 with the loss, giving up eight runs with just four being earned over five-plus innings.
Holder led the Pack at the plate, driving in three runs on a 2-for-5 night which included his ninth homer of the season. For the Beavers, Krieg drove in six runs, going 3-for-5 with a homer.
The teams wrap the two-game set Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m.
