Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nevada women’s basketball defeats SJSU, secures No. 4 seed in MW Championships

RENO, Nev. - Nevada women's basketball collected an 82-65 victory over San Jose State at Lawlor Events Center Tuesday night in the regular season finale, securing the No. 4 seed and a first round bye in the 2024 Mountain West Championships.

Seniors Lexie Givens and Victoria Davis led Nevada with 15 points each while sophomore forward Kennedy Lee added 14 points. Freshman guard Izzy Sullivan added 11 points and fellow freshman Dymonique Maxie dished out a career-high 10 assists, being the first Nevada freshman in the last decade to have at least 10 assists in a game.

San Jose State struck first in the first quarter, knocking down a 3-pointer to take an early six-point advantage. Feeding off the energy from the Lawlor Events Center crowd, Nevada responded with a 9-0 scoring run to swing the advantage. The Spartans continued to battle for the lead, scoring seven of the final nine points of the quarter to take a two-point lead at the end of the first.

Using 3-pointers as a weapon in the second quarter, Nevada knocked down six buckets from beyond the arc to take and stretch the lead. Sullivan and Davis began the 3-point parade with a pair of treys in the opening minutes of the second quarter. The Pack knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers later in the quarter to take a double-digit lead, but San Jose State responded with a 3-pointer of its own to cut the deficit to seven.

Givens helped the Pack get the final strike before halftime, hitting a layup with 25 seconds left in the half to give Nevada a nine-point lead going into the locker room.

Trading baskets to open the second half, San Jose State cut the deficit to single digits in the third quarter. After Nevada got its double-digit lead back, San Jose State hit a layup to make it a nine-point game once again.

Just like she did in New Mexico, Givens beat the buzzer to give the Pack an added offensive lift. The Alameda, California, native collected a steal following a pair of free throws and swished the running floater before the horn to put the Pack in front 58-45.

Despite San Jose State shooting 70 percent from the floor in the final period, Nevada answered with 5-for-5 shooting from 3-point range in the final period to clinch the regular season finale on its home court.

Nevada heads to Las Vegas for the 2024 Mountain West Championships and faces No. 5 seed Colorado State on Monday, March 11 in the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m.
