TUCSON, Ariz. – Following a doubles point win featuring two tiebreaker wins, Nevada Women's Tennis go winless in singles play to ranked Arizona.
The Wolf Pack's afternoon started strong, winning the doubles point in comeback fashion through the depth of the lineup. Arizona won the top-flight match with Belen Nevenhoven and Martyna Ostrzygalo's 6-3 victory over
Amahée Charrier and
Anastasia Luneva. Nevenhoven and Ostryzygalo broke Nevada's second service game, propelling the Wildcats to a 3-1 lead before a second break sealed the opening doubles match for Arizona.
The doubles session turned in Nevada's favor with
Léa Cakarevic and
Marlene Foerster defeating Teja Tirunelveli and Kayla Wilkins in a tiebreaker, the first of the doubles session. Both teams won each of its service games leading to a 6-6 tie and forcing a deciding frame. Arizona jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the tiebreaker before Cakarevic and Foerster won five straight points. Tirunelveli and Wilkins responded with three points of their own to even the tiebreaker, 5-5. The Nevada duo won the final two points of the tiebreaker, including the winning point on a break.
The third flight doubles match looked to have been won early by Nevada with
Mia Miranda and
Kennedy Robinson leading Reece Carter and Lauren Friedman 4-1 following a break and a Robinson service game victory. However, the Wildcat pair won the next three games to tie the match, 4-4. Nevada and Arizona traded their service games, forcing a tiebreaker, 6-6. The tiebreaker began with each team winning a service point followed by a break, tying the frame at 2-2. Nevada repeated the same sequence for a 4-2 lead before Arizona pulled back another point. A pair of Robinson service points earned Nevada match point. Robinson and Miranda sealed the match and doubles point on a return point win, defeating Carter and Friedman, 7-6 (3).
Arizona quickly tied the dual at 1-1 with its third flight victory. Ostrzygalo made quick work of Luneva, defeating the Nevada fifth-year 6-0, 6-0.
The Wildcats continued their singles success, winning the final five singles matches as well. Carter edged the lead for Arizona, and the Wildcats would never look back. Carter and Foerster traded a service game and break, bringing the first set to 2-2 before Carter won the next four games, winning the first set 6-2. She would repeat the result in the second set with three breaks of Foerster for the 6-2, 6-2 win.
Midori Castillo-Meza doubled the Arizona lead, defeating Cakarevic 6-4, 6-0. Castillo-Meza broke Cakarevic twice to begin the match, gaining a 3-0 lead early. Cakarevic responded with two breaks of her own and winning the next four games for a 4-3 lead in the first set. Castillo-Meza won the next nine games to close the first set and sweep the second set for the Wildcats.
Arizona clinched the dual following Tirunelveli's fifth flight win over Robinson. Tirunelveli won the first four games of the match before Robinson won three games of her own closing the Arizona lead to just one game. Tirunelveli won her service game and sealed the first set on a Robinson double fault. Robinson broke Tirunelveli to open the second set, however the Arizona freshman went on a winning streak of five games. Robinson attempted a late comeback but could only manage three games before Tirunelveli won the final game, and the match, 6-3, 6-4.
Tavi Narendran picked up the fifth Arizona point, defeating Miranda 6-2, 6-3. Like the No. 5 match, Arizona jumped out to an early lead with Narendran taking a 4-0 lead. Narendran and Miranda traded service games to close set one, 6-2. Narendran took another 4-0 lead in set two but lost the next three games to Miranda's comeback effort. Narendran, however, won the final two games, including the match-winner on a break of Miranda, bringing the dual score to 5-1.
Nevada's only set win came in the first flight, with Charrier defeating Wilkins 6-3 with two breaks in the first set. Wilkins responded winning the second set 7-5, forcing a third set tiebreaker. With the dual already being clinched for Arizona, a 10-point tiebreaker was played to determine the match result. The pair traded streaks for a while with Wilkins winning the first two points, allowing the next three, winning the following four, before giving up her own four-point streak to Charrier, giving Charrier the 7-6 tiebreaker lead. Wilkins and Charrier traded points with ties at 7-7 and 8-8, before Wilkins took the 9-8 lead on her serve and broker Charrier for the 10-8 win. Wilkins' win finished 3-6, 7-5, [10-8].
Nevada returns to the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson tomorrow at 9 a.m. PST for a neutral-site match against Western Michigan. The Broncos are also be coming off a loss to Arizona, having lost to the Wildcats 7-0 earlier this morning.
