RENO, Nev. - Jarod Lucas scored a game-high 26 points, Kenan Blackshear poured in 16 points and dished out nine assists, and the Nevada Men's Basketball team held UNLV to just 39.0 percent shooting from the field on their way to a 75-65 victory over the Rebels in front of a record crowd to sweep the season series over their intrastate rivals.
With the victory, Nevada improved to 26-6 overall this season, including a mark of 13-5 in Mountain West play. The Pack earned the No. 2 seed in the Mountain West Tournament and will face the winner of Colorado State and San José State on Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
The 26 wins by Nevada prior to entering postseason play tied a program record for the second most regular season victories in Wolf Pack Basketball history.
Nevada was impressive on both ends of the court during the contest. Offensively, the Pack shot an exceptional 52.2 percent from the field and 91.3 percent from the free throw line. Nevada also knocked 37.5 percent of their 3-point field goal attempts.
Nevada recorded 18 assists on 24 made field goals, and the Pack scored 14 points in transition.
Defensively, Nevada limited UNLV to just 65 points on 39.0 percent shooting from the field and 29.2 percent from behind the arc. The Pack also outrebounded the Rebels 33-28 throughout the game.
Lucas was sensational in his final game at Lawlor Events Center, dropping a game-high 26 points on 8-16 shooting from the field, 4-9 from behind the arc, and 6-7 at the free throw line.
Blackshear also had an immaculate performance in his final contest at Lawlor Events Center, as the fifth year senior scored 16 points on 5-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line, while also dishing out a game-high nine assists and pulling down three rebounds.
Nick Davidson recorded his sixth double-double of the season, as he scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Davidson also dished out three assists, and he completed the contest with a game-high plus/minus of +15 in 36 minutes of action.
Nevada received significant contributions from their bench, particularly from Daniel Foster and Tyler Rolison. Foster was outstanding, as he scored six points while not missing a shot, pulled down four rebounds, and recorded a team-high two steals. Rolison was tremendous for the Pack, as he scored seven points on 3-3 shooting from the field.
Tre Coleman had an all-around stellar performance for Nevada, as he scored seven points on 2-2 shooting from the field and 2-2 at the free throw line, in addition to pulling down four rebounds, dishing out two assists, and recording two blocks.
Nevada controlled the contest from start to finish, as the Pack led for 39 minutes and two seconds throughout the game, while trailing for just 28 seconds.
First Half
Nevada got off to an outstanding start in the contest. After getting a defensive stop, Blackshear found Lucas open in transition and Lucas proceeded to drain a 3-pointer.
The Pack then got another defensive stop and Lucas drilled a mid-range jumper off another pass from Blackshear, as Nevada took a 5-0 lead at the 18:46 mark.
After UNLV scored their first points of the game on a 3-pointer, Hymes finished a layup and Lucas knocked down a pair of free throws, giving the Pack a 9-3 lead. Lucas and Coleman then buried back-to-back 3-pointers, as Nevada took a 15-3 lead five minutes into the contest.
The Pack continued to pour it on, as they took a 17-5 edge over UNLV after Coleman made a layup with 14:28 left in the period.
The Rebels battled back, as they outscored Nevada 14-7 over the next 4:27, trimming the Pack's lead down to five points with 10:01 remaining in the half.
Nevada responded by reeling off a 7-0 run over the next 1:33, as they extended their advantage up to 12 points. The run began with a highlight reel play from Blackshear, as he hit his defender with a spin move, and then drained a pull up jumper. Blackshear then finished a layup; and, after a defensive stop, Lucas made a 3-pointer off a beautiful pass from Blackshear, as the Pack took a 31-19 lead at the 8:28 mark.
UNLV outscored Nevada 12-8 over the remainder of the half; however, the Pack took a 39-31 advantage into the break.
Nevada shot 54.2 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from behind the arc over the first 20 minutes, while limiting the Rebels to 42.9 percent shooting from the field and 18.2 percent from behind the arc.
Second Half
UNLV opened up the half with a bucket in the paint; but, Nevada responded as Davidson corralled an offensive rebound and finished a layup at the rim.
Lucas then drilled a mid-range jumper, pushing Nevada's lead up to 10 points, as they held a 43-33 advantage with 17:59 on the clock.
After the two squads traded buckets, Nevada then found themselves leading 45-35 with 16:24 remaining in the half.
The Rebels made a massive push to get back into the contest, as they put together a 13-2 run over the next 4:26, taking a 48-47 lead over the Pack with 11:58 to go. The 48-47 lead for UNLV marked the Rebels' first and only lead of the contest, as Coleman knocked down a pair of free throws 28 seconds later, recapturing the lead for Nevada.
Nevada took complete control of the contest down the stretch, as they outscored the Rebels, 28-17 over the remainder of the contest, going on to earn the 10-point victory over UNLV to beat their intrastate rivals for the second time this season.
