RENO, Nev. - Nick Davidson scored a career-high 22 points to lead five different Wolf Pack players in double figures, and the Nevada Men's Basketball team dismantled San José State on Friday evening, earning a 30-point victory over the Spartans to improve to 17-5.
After the victory, Nevada is an exceptional 11-1 at Lawlor Events Center this season, and the Pack improved to 4-4 in Mountain West play.
Nevada dominated San Jose State from start to finish on both ends of the court, leading by as much as 43 points.
The Pack shot 48.3 percent from the field and 47.8 percent from behind the arc throughout the contest. Nevada recorded a sensational 23 assists on 29 made field goals, and the Pack pulled down a season-high 18 offensive rebounds. Nevada scored 30 points in the paint and received significant production from its bench in the form of 32 points.
Davidson led the way for the Pack, scoring a career-high 22 points on 8-12 shooting from the field and 3-5 from behind the arc. The eight field goals also marked a new career-best for Davidson, and the three 3-pointers matched his career-high. The redshirt-sophomore also pulled down 11 boards, seven of which came on the offensive glass, as he recorded the third double-double of his career.
After failing to reach double figures in scoring for just the second time this season against New Mexico, Jarod Lucas bounced back in a tremendous way, pouring in 20 points on 8-15 shooting from the field and 3-5 from behind the arc. Lucas also pulled down four rebounds, dished out three assists, and recorded one steal in the contest.
Freshman guard Tyler Rolison had one of the best games of his collegiate career, as he matched a career-high with 12 points on 2-3 shooting from behind the arc and 6-8 at the free throw line.
Forward Tylan Pope continued his recent stretch of outstanding play, scoring 10 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting, including 1-1 from behind the arc, in addition to pulling down three rebounds.
Kenan Blackshear chipped in 10 points for the Pack on a highly efficient 4-5 shooting, while also dishing out a game-high six assists in just 17 minutes of action.
Nevada maintained the lead for 38 minutes and 34 seconds throughout the game, while only trailing for 19 seconds.
First Half
After losing the jump ball, Nevada got a defensive stop and on offense, K.J. Hymes got the ball in the post, drew a double team, and kicked it out to Tre Coleman who found a wide-open Blackshear in the corner. Blackshear buried a 3-pointer, as Nevada took an early 3-0 lead over the Spartans.
SJSU tied up the contest with a 3-pointer of their own 27 seconds later; but, Blackshear hit a mid-range jumper to put the Pack up 5-3.
San José State drained another 3-pointer after Blackshear's jumper, as the Spartans took their first and only lead of the contest at the 18:09 mark.
19 seconds later, Davidson splashed his first 3-pointer of the night off a beautiful pass from Blackshear, marking the beginning of a remarkable 62-18 run for Nevada.
Lucas scored his first points of the night after Davidson's 3-pointer, drilling a contested mid-range jumper, as Nevada took a 10-6 lead with 17:12 left in the first half.
After Davidson made a lone free throw, Lucas drained his first 3-pointer of the night off another assist from Blackshear, expanding the Pack's lead to 14-6.
The Spartans got a bucket to cut the deficit down to six points; however, Lucas began to heat up, as he picked up a loose ball on defense and buried a transition 3-pointer well behind the 3-point line while drawing a foul. Lucas went on to complete the four-point play, giving Nevada an 18-8 lead at the 13:58 mark.
San José State hit another triple to get within seven points of the Pack; but, Nevada responded with a 12-0 run over a span of five minutes and 43 seconds.
The run began with a Davidson layup, followed by eight consecutive free throws from the Pack. Pope completed the run by throwing down an unbelievable one-handed slam over the top of a San José State defender, igniting the Wolf Pack crowd and forcing the Spartans to take a timeout at the 8:02 mark with Nevada leading 30-11.
SJSU scored out of the timeout; but, Rolison entered the game and drained a 3-pointer to push the Pack's lead up to 20 points. After the Spartans scored another bucket, Pope splashed his first 3-pointer of the season, as Nevada led 36-15 with 6:35 left until halftime.
Nevada continued to pour it on, as they outscored San José State 13-9 over the remainder of the first half, taking a 49-24 advantage into halftime.
The Pack shot 46.7 percent from the field (14-30) and 53.8 percent from behind the arc (7-13) in the first half, while limiting San José State to just 37 percent shooting from the field (10-27) and 25 percent from behind the arc (3-12).
The Pack outrebounded SJSU 25-11 over the first 20 minutes of action, and Nevada's bench outscored San Jose State's bench 19-3 in the first period.
Second Half
Nevada picked up right where they left off to start the second half, opening up the period an outstanding 18-0 run. On the Pack's first possession, Blackshear found Davidson open behind the arc and Davidson buried another 3-pointer to commence the second period.
After Blackshear recorded a steal on the other end, Lucas splashed a 3-pointer of his own, pushing Nevada's advantage up to 55-24 with 19:06 left in the game.
Just over a minute later, Coleman got in on the action, as he drilled his first 3-pointer of the evening. Hymes tallied a steal on Nevada's next defensive possession, and the Pack quickly turned it into offense, as Davidson hit his third 3-pointer of the night, as Nevada opened up the second half with four consecutive 3-pointers.
Leading 61-24, Lucas drove past his defender and finished a difficult layup in the lane to expand Nevada's lead up to 39 points with 17:04 remaining.
Shortly after Lucas' layup, Blackshear finished a layup of his own to extend the advantage to 41 points. Lucas then proceeded to record a steal and take it coast-to-coast, finishing a layup at the other end of the court to complete the 18-0 run and give the Pack a 67-24 lead at the 15:58 mark.
San Jose State attempted to battle back, as they slowly chipped into the Pack's lead; however, 27 points was the closest that they were able to get, as Nevada cruised throughout the remainder of the second half on their way to a 90-60 victory over the Spartans.
The 30-point victory marked the largest margin of victory in a Mountain West game for Nevada under Head Coach Steve Alford, and the win also marked Alford's 674th career victory as a Head Coach, as he will have the opportunity to reach the 675-win mark at Utah State on Tuesday.
