Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nevada women’s basketball drops a heartbreaker at Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Nevada women's basketball fell victim to Colorado State's fourth quarter comeback and was defeated by the Rams 54-51 on Wednesday afternoon at Moby Arena.

Senior forward Lexie Givens led Nevada in scoring with 11 points to go with eight rebounds. Fifth year guard/forward Kaylen Banwareesingh was one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Victoria Davis added 10 points off the bench.

After Givens hit a 3-pointer to give Nevada the early lead, another 3-pointer by the Wolf Pack sparked a 7-0 scoring run to open the first quarter. Nevada stretched its lead to double-digits, but Colorado State quickly cut the deficit in half with back-to-back baskets. Davis converted the fastbreak layup off a steal to give Nevada a 17-10 lead after the opening period.

Nevada continued its offensive momentum in the second quarter, draining back-to-back 3-pointers to move ahead by nine. Colorado State continued to chip away at Nevada's lead, however, hitting a jumper after Nevada made a pair of free throws to make it a 27-22 game at halftime.

Colorado State, however, came out of the locker room fired up. The Rams opened the third quarter with five unanswered points and forced Nevada to call a timeout a minute and a half into the second half. Banwareesingh helped Nevada regain the lead with pair free throws, with Givens knocking down a 3-pointer shortly after to put the Pack in front 32-27.

The Rams responded with 10 unanswered points to take a three-point advantage, but freshman guard Dymonique Maxie came up with a basket while drawing the foul to give the Wolf Pack their lead right back. Maxie knocked down another free throw to put Nevada ahead 42-40 heading into the final period.

The Rams once again opened on a scoring run, coming up with 10 unanswered points to take a 50-42 lead in the fourth quarter. Colorado State had a six-point lead with one minute left in regulation, but junior guard Kaylee Borden cut the deficit in half with a basket while drawing the foul. Nevada missed a jumper on its final offensive possession and Colorado State ran out the clock in the final seconds to seal the win.

Nevada's final road game of the regular season takes place on Saturday at New Mexico at 1 p.m.
