STOCKTON, Calif. - Nevada Softball stormed out of the gates on the first day of the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, outscoring its opposition, 20-0, over just 11 innings en route to a pair of wins.
The Wolf Pack (10-3) opened the day with an 11-0, five-inning rout of Stony Brook, and turned right around with a 9-0, six-inning win over Creighton.
Tyra Clary and Blake Craft were on point Friday, allowing just a combined five hits while striking out eight batters while each picking up a win.
At the plate, Aaliyah Jenkins hit two of the Pack's five homers on the day, both coming in the morning win over Stony Brook. Charli Hawkins, Taryn Jenkins, and Haley Painter also went deep for Nevada.
Nevada returns to action Saturday against the same two teams, facing Creighton at 10 a.m. with the rematch with Stony Brook scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
Game 1
Nevada 11, Stony Brook 0 (5)
Nevada broke the morning game open with an eight-run second inning, as Aaliyah Jenkins homered twice in the frame to give Nevada a commanding 9-0 lead.
Leading by a run heading into the frame, Aaliyah Jenkins led it off with a solo shot, and, with runners on second and third with one out, Chelie Senini drove in Hawkins with a fielder's choice to make it 3-0.
Painter and Bridgette Gilliano followed with singles, Gilliano's driving in Maile Olsen with the fourth run, and Taryn Jenkins made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly. Gabby Herrera drove in Painter and Gilliano with a single to right-center, before Jenkins bookended the frame with a two-run blast to right.
The lead was more than enough for Clary, who improved to 2-2 on the season with the shutout. Clary took a no-hitter into the fourth, having only allowed one baserunner, before two Stony Brook hits in the frame ended the no-hit bid. Clary would finish the outing with three strikeouts and just two hits allowed with no walks.
Game 2
Nevada 9, Creighton 0 (6)
Nevada had a quick turnaround to its second game of the day, wrapping up its back-to-back with a 9-0, six-inning win over Creighton.
Taryn Jenkins got the Pack on the board right away in the first, slamming a two-run homer to open up a 2-0 lead.
Blake Craft kept the Blue Jays off the board in the opening frames thanks to help from her defense. In the second inning, she paired with Hawkins to catch Kaelen Schultz trying to steal home, ending the frame with the two-run lead intact. An inning later, Craft helped herself by getting out of a two-on, two-out situation by striking out Madeline Vejvoda.
The Nevada bats came alive again in the fourth, as Hawkins led it off with a solo shot, followed by a single from Olsen and an RBI triple from Madison Clark to double the lead at 4-0.
Taryn Jenkins' sacrifice fly and Herrera's RBI single made it 6-0 an inning later, positioning the Pack to end another one early. And that's just what Nevada did in the sixth, as singles from Clark and Senini set up Painter's walk-off, three-run homer.
Olsen, Clark, Herrera, and Gilliano made up a Pack quartet with two hits apiece, while Painter and Taryn Jenkins each drove in three runs.
In the circle, Craft struck out five while allowing just three hits, her first shutout of the season keeping her record perfect at 4-0.
