FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State defeated Nevada women's basketball 57-45 on Wednesday night at Save Mart Center.
Senior forward Lexie Givens led Nevada in scoring with 10 points while junior guard Audrey Roden led the Pack on the boards with six to go with eight points.
After Nevada made the first two baskets of the game, Fresno State responded by going on a 9-0 scoring run to take the lead. Nevada quickly tied it up, using a second-chance layup from Roden and a 3-pointer from freshman guard Izzy Sullivan one minute later. Following a pair of Wolf Pack free throws, Fresno State closed the quarter on an 8-0 scoring run to retake the lead.
Givens opened the second quarter with a basket while drawing the foul, with Roden converting a layup to cut the Fresno State deficit to four. The Bulldogs, however, once again went on an offensive run. Fresno State scored 12 unanswered points and finished the second quarter shooting 50 percent from the field to take a 35-21 lead into the locker room.
Fresno State came out of the halftime break with the first two baskets before junior guard Kaylee Borden responded with a layup. Both teams went into a back-and-forth defensive battle, with both Fresno State and Nevada holding each other scoreless for four minutes in the third. Despite holding Fresno State to just seven third quarter points, the Bulldogs still took a double-digit lead heading into the final period.
A layup by Fresno State with 4:07 left in the game allowed the Bulldogs to stay in front by 16, but Nevada would not go away. The Pack converted a basket after obtaining a steal to cut the deficit and made five of their final seven field goals. Fresno State, however, made 11 of 14 free throws to maintain their lead and clinch the win.
Nevada comes back to Lawlor Events Center on Saturday night to face in-state rival UNLV at 6:30 p.m. in the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union. The Pack will face the Rebels in front of a nationally televised audience on FS1.
