PROVO, Utah – Nevada loses fourth-straight dual with loss at BYU, despite tight beginning.
Nevada Men's Tennis dropped its match in Provo, the front end of a back-to-back weekend.
The doubles session opened competitively with all three matches being held within a game up until the fifth game of the match. BYU's Jack Barnett and Redd Owen were the first to pull away for the Cougars, defeating Matheo Coupu and Loris Zisswiller, 6-3. BYU won the doubles point with their flight two victory from Tygen Goldammer and TJ Wells. Goldammer and Wells won their final three games against Rémy Trégourès and Greg Valente, sealing the point advantage for BYU. Zach Fuchs and Wally Thayne were winning their flight one match versus Edgar Destouet and Youssef Kadiri before the match was abandoned at 5-4.
In his return to play from injury, Coupu faced Barnett in the first flight. Barnett took control of the match early, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Coupu was able to pull back a game before Barnett closed the set 6-2. The second set was a similar story, with Barnett winning the last four games of the match. The flight one matchup finished 6-2, 6-1, handing BYU the 2-0 dual lead.
Nevada's only point came from a dominant performance from Zisswiller. The French senior won nine straight games to defeat BYU's Owen, 6-3, 6-0. Zisswiller's flight four match brought the Wolf Pack within a point however, BYU took charge, winning the next four matches.
At flight two, Kadiri and Thayne fought back and forth with six ties throughout the first set. Thayne would win the thrilling tiebreaker for the set, 7-6 (7). Kadiri began the second set with a break and a 3-1 lead over Thayne however, the BYU man won the next five games, closing out the match, 7-6 (7), 6-3.
The defeating blow for the Pack came with Destouet's heartbreakingly close loss to Fuchs, both sets ending in a tiebreaker. With only two breaks in the entire match, Fuchs defeated Destouet 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4).
David Duong claimed the fifth point for BYU with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory over Valente. The final point for the Cougars came with Goldammer's tiebreak win against Trégourès. With Trégourès winning the first set 7-6 (4) and Goldammer claiming the second, the tiebreaker was played where Goldammer prevailed 10-4.
Tomorrow, the Pack takes a short trip to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Utes. The match will begin at 11 A.M. at Utah's George S. Eccles Tennis Center. You can follow the match by live stream or live results.
