RENO, Nev. - Nevada women's basketball held off San Diego State's monstrous comeback and won its seventh game in Mountain West play by a score of 72-71 on Wednesday night at Lawlor Events Center.
Junior guard Audrey Roden led with a game-high 19 points while freshman guard Izzy Sullivan added 13 points and senior forward Lexie Givens had 11 points with seven rebounds. Fifth year guard Kaylen Banwareesingh had a game-high 12 rebounds with eight points off the bench, her second straight game with double-digit boards.
With the game tied at six to start the first quarter, jumpers from Sullivan and Givens allowed Nevada to take a five-point lead. After Nevada stretched the lead off an 8-0 scoring run, Roden fed Givens for the buzzer-beating layup that allowed the Pack to go ahead by 10 following the first quarter.
3-pointers by Roden and Givens allowed Nevada to stay in front by double-digits to open the second quarter, with Roden converting a fastbreak jumper to give the Pack a 33-19 advantage. Five points from senior guard Gabby Giuffre allowed Nevada to go ahead by 16, but San Diego State rallied five straight points to cut the deficit.
Nevada, however, would be the ones to land the final punch of the first half, with senior guard Victoria Davis hitting a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to put the Pack ahead by 14 going into the locker room.
San Diego State opened the third quarter with a 6-0 scoring run to make it a single-digit game. Nevada countered San Diego State's third period scoring attack with buckets of its own, but a late 5-0 scoring run allowed the Aztecs to make it a one-possession game. A late jumper by Roden with 43 seconds left in the quarter allowed Nevada to take a 53-48 advantage heading into the final period.
Another 5-0 scoring run by San Diego State allowed the Aztecs to tie it at 66 with under four minutes to play. Nevada quickly responded on its next possession, feeding Sullivan for a 3-pointer for a 69-66 lead. San Diego State struck again by immediately responding with a 3-pointer of its own to make it a tied game.
Despite San Diego State's relentless offensive attack in the second half, the Pack was determined to not to let this game slip away.
Following San Diego State's game-tying 3-pointer, Roden delivered a lightning strike from beyond the arc that gave Nevada a 72-69 lead with under two minutes to play. The Aztecs knocked down a jumper with 33 seconds left and forced Nevada into a missed shot, getting the final possession with seven seconds to go. The Pack, however, did not allow San Diego State to get a shot off on its final possession to secure the one-point win.
