Overbay, inducted into the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010, played four seasons at Nevada (1996-99), where he was a 1999 All-American and a two-time All-Big West selection. He helped Nevada to an NCAA regional appearance in 1999 and was part of the Wolf Pack's Big West champion teams in 1997 and 1998. At the close of his Nevada career, Overbay held the program's career records for at bats (864), runs batted in (260), and doubles (62), along with the single-season mark for at-bats (260).
Drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 18th round of the 1999 MLB June Amateur Draft, Overbay made his major-league debut with the club in September 2001 and went on to spend 14 seasons (2001-14) in the bigs.
A trade to the Milwaukee Brewers ahead of the 2004 season led to full-time action for Overbay, and a jump in his production. Overbay led the majors with 53 doubles while batting .301 with 16 homers and 87 RBIs for the Brewers in 2004, starting an eight-season stretch as one of the league's top power-hitting first basemen. Over five seasons (2006-10) with the Toronto Blue Jays, Overbay batted .268 with 180 doubles (hitting at least 30 in each of the five seasons), 83 home runs (including two seasons with at least 20), and 336 RBIs. In his first season in Toronto, in 2006, Overbay set career highs in home runs (22), RBIs (92), and slugging percentage (.508) while finishing fourth in the majors with 46 doubles.
In addition to his five seasons with Toronto, and two stints with Arizona (2001-03, 2011-12), Overbay also played for Milwaukee (2004-05, 2014), Pittsburgh (2011), Atlanta (2012), and the New York Yankees (2013). He finished his career batting .266 with 356 doubles, 151 homers, 675 RBIs, and a .429 slugging percentage.
