Box Score WACO, Texas - Youssef Kadiri lost his first-round match at the NCAA Singles Championships to fifth-ranked Colton Smith of Arizona, 6-4, 6-3.
Smith opened the match, breaking Kadiri and forcing Kadiri to play on defense in his own service game. Smith backed up his break with a strong service game, winning three of his four points on his serve. Kadiri found his groove, winning his next service match despite falling behind 0-30. Kadiri and Smith went back and forth, winning their respective service games. Smith's key break to start the match decided the set for Smith.
Kadiri and Smith continued to win their service matches, bringing the set to 2-2, before Smith broke Kadiri again for a 3-2 lead. Behind 4-2, Kadiri went up 40-0 in his service game, before Smith forced a deciding point, which despite all the momentum against him, Kadiri won. Smith won another service game, taking a 5-3 lead. Kadiri led 30-15 in his final service game before Smith won three straight points, winning the game, set, and match.
Kadiri finished the fall season with 17 singles victories, tying his career high. Kadiri was the first Nevada men's singles player to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships.
