Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nevada women’s basketball completes comeback, defeats Fresno State 63-62

RENO, Nev. - Down by 15 points, Nevada women's basketball erupted in the second half and collected its third straight win with the 63-62 victory over Fresno State Saturday at Lawlor Events Center.

Nevada outscored Fresno State in the third quarter 20-9 off 61.5 percent shooting and regained the lead with 2:36 left in regulation. The Pack held Fresno State to 17.6 percent shooting in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Fifth year guard Claire Jacobs and junior guard Audrey Roden led Nevada in scoring with 11 points each while fifth year guard/forward Kaylen Banwareesingh had 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Banwareesingh, who had a season-high for rebounds, collected her 10th collegiate double-digit rebounding game dating back to her time at UMass Lowell.

After Fresno State jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, Jacobs hit a 3-pointer in front of her sister, Mia, a sophomore guard for the Bulldogs. Freshman guard Izzy Sullivan knocked down a jumper to make it a one-possession game, but Fresno State finished the first 10 minutes shooting 57.1 percent to take a 10-point lead after the first period.

The Bulldogs maintained its double-digit lead with a pair of 3-pointers and led by 15 four minutes into the quarter. Nevada continued to chip away at the deficit, going on a quick 5-0 scoring run and cut it down to make it a 38-30 game in favor of the Bulldogs going into the locker room.

Fired up to get their first home win of the 2024 calendar year, Nevada turned that energy into lights out shooting. The Pack opened the third period with seven unanswered points, tying the game off a 3-pointer from Roden. Nevada took its first lead of the game off an offensive rebound and bucket from senior forward Lexie Givens and made it a two-possession game with a basket and pair of free throws from Banwareesingh.

A layup from Jacobs off the assist from Banwareesingh made it a six-point game, but Fresno State responded with five straight points to cut Nevada's lead to one. Banwareesingh continued to find her teammates, assisting for a layup to sophomore forward Kennedy Lee that allowed the Pack to move ahead 50-47 heading into the final period.

Fresno State used a pair of free throws and a layup with 4:38 left in regulation to swing the advantage, but a fastbreak layup by freshman guard Dymonique Maxie allowed Nevada to take back its lead. The Bulldogs tied it up again thanks to a free throw from Mia Jacobs.

While Mia was winning the scoring battle, it was her older sister Claire who was determined to not let her and Fresno State win the duel between their teams.

Jacobs penetrated to the lane and converted a jumper that gave Nevada the lead once again, assisting on Nevada's next basket to give the Pack a four-point lead with under two minutes to play. Fresno State hit two free throws, but a basket by Roden off a sideline inbounds pass from Sullivan allowed Nevada to take a five-point lead.

Mia Jacobs kept Fresno State in the game, hitting a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to make it a 61-59 game. Senior guard Victoria Davis calmly and collectively sank both free throws after being intentionally fouled and Fresno State responded with another 3-pointer with two seconds left. The Pack took care of the ball on the final possession to secure the one-point win.

Nevada returns to Lawlor Events Center Tuesday at 11 a.m. to take on Colorado State in its annual "When I Grow Up Game".
