RENO, Nev. - Matt Clayton, who wrapped a standout career at Nevada last spring, has signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins, the organization announced Friday.
Clayton was named to the All-Mountain West Second Team last season, his final one with the Wolf Pack. In 2023, Clayton, the lone returner among Nevada's position players, had a career year in his fifth season with the Wolf Pack. The Yuba City, Calif., native posted career highs in numerous categories, including batting (.309), hits (63), homers (10), doubles (18), and RBIs (38).
In Mountain West play, Clayton, one of just two Pack players to start all 30 contests, batted .311, and led the team with 16 doubles and 26 RBIs, while finishing second in batting, home runs (six), and hits (37). Overall, Clayton started 51 of the Pack's 53 contests in 2023.
Over his five-year career (2019-23) with the Wolf Pack, Clayton appeared in 179 games, making 170 starts. He batted .284 with 188 hits, including 48 doubles and 27 home runs, while driving in 126 runs. He also started 36 games in 2021, as Nevada swept to the Mountain West title and its first NCAA Regional appearance since 2000.
