Larkin’s penalty kick save allows Nevada soccer to draw Fresno State

RENO, Nev. - Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ally Larkin came up with a penalty kick save in the 88th minute that allowed Nevada soccer to come away with a 1-1 draw to Fresno State Thursday at Mackay Stadium.

Larkin collected five saves in the second half while junior forward Trinity Sandridge scored her first goal since Oct. 15, 2021.

Taking full advantage of the fraternities and sororities in attendance for Greek Night, Nevada fed off the crowd's energy to quickly get to work. Nevada fired four shots in the first 25 minutes to become the early aggressors and maintain the momentum.

Fresno State looked to take the early lead in the 39th minute, but the Bulldogs' shot on goal was saved by redshirt senior goalkeeper Emily McCue. Fresno State's final shot of the first half went out wide left that left the match tied 0-0 going into the locker room.

After a back-and-forth battle halfway through the second half, Nevada capitalized to take the lead. Sandridge found the back of the net off assists from sophomores Sydnie Fong and Serene Gronauer to go up 1-0. Fresno State, however, responded with an equalizer goal off a corner kick two minutes later to make it a 1-1 match.

The Bulldogs looked to take the lead after drawing a foul inside the penalty area, but Nevada welcomed the challenge. Larkin, who subbed in for McCue in the second half following an injury, locked her eyes on the ball and met the shot to prevent the tying goal in the 88th minute. The Pack prevented any more offensive chances to seal the draw and earn a point in the Mountain West standings.

Nevada welcomes the defending conference champions, San Jose State, Sunday at Mackay Stadium at 1 p.m. for Youth Day. The first 150 kids 8th grade and younger will receive a free Nevada lunch tote.
