Nevada wraps Eastern Washington Invitational dropping to Seattle

CHENEY, Wash. – After being up 2-0 over the Seattle Redhawks, Nevada couldn't hang on as Seattle completed a reverse sweep to win the match 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Reese Court, the Pack dropping their final match of the weekend at the Eastern Washington Invitational.
 
Nicanora Clarke and Sia Liilii led the offense with 19 and 17 kills respectively, with Liilii also recording two service aces, marking her fourteenth total of the season. Highlighting the defense, Jaclyn Sanchez has a total 51 assists. Four Wolf Pack members recorded double digits in digs, including Sanchez who tallied 10 in the match. Hikialani Kaohelaulii led with 25 digs, while Liilii had 13 and Clarke recorded 10.
 
The Pack took an early five-point lead in the first set over Seattle 10-5 with three kills in a row by three different Nevada members and an error by Seattle's Naima Foster. Nevada continued to separate from Seattle and extend their lead to 15-10 with Schwartz's second kill of the day heading into the media timeout. The Redhawks came within one after two straight kills and a bad set from Nevada bringing the score to 16-15. Seattle forced the Pack to call a timeout after a Nevada error gave the Redhawks a point to tie the match at 16-16 a piece. Sanchez's second service ace of the set gave Nevada a 21-19 lead before a kill by Arianna Bilby drew within one for the Redhawks as they continued to fight back. Two back-to-back kills by Liilii, her fourth of the day, allowed Nevada to reach set point leading Seattle 24-21. An attack error by Seattle gave Nevada the set 25-22.
 
The Redhawks started off strong in the second going on a 3-0 run to lead 5-2 before the Pack bounced back to tie it up at 6-6 in result of two Seattle errors and kills from Sanchez and Liilii. Nevada took the lead 12-11 by a kill from Platt before the Redhawks scored a point to tie the score once again 12-12. At the media timeout, the Pack were able to take the lead after going on a 3-0 run with Liilii securing two of those three points with her sixth kill and her second service ace of the match. The Pack forced Seattle to call timeout with a 6-0 scoring run, opening their lead 18-14, their largest of the set. A 4-2 run by the Pack put them within one of reaching set point, leading the Redhawks 23-19 before Seattle called another timeout. Two straight errors by Nevada brought Seattle within two, but Liilii's ninth kill of the match and an error by the Redhawks allowed Nevada to claim the second set 25-21, going up 2-0 over Seattle.
 
Seattle opened with a 3-0 run to kick off the third set with two kills by Marley Hardgrave followed by an attack error by Nevada. The Redhawks forced Nevada to call their first timeout after the Pack had three straight errors, putting Seattle up 7-2. Liilii was able to break Seattle's 4-0 scoring run with her 10th kill of the day, bringing Nevada within five. The Redhawks went up 12-5, forcing the Pack to call their second timeout of the set. Nevada continued to fight back as they trailed only by three 17-14 after four straight errors by Seattle. Nevada continued their 5-0 scoring run to draw within two of the Redhawks before two aces in a row by Seattle's Foster helped extend the Redhawk's lead by four, going up 21-17. The Pack continued to battle, coming within one and keeping the set alive 23-22 to force Seattle to call their second timeout of the set. The Redhawks ultimately claimed the third set 25-22, Nevada leading the match 2-1.
 
Opening up the fourth set was all Nevada as they took an early 8-4 lead after Liilii earned her fourth service ace of the day, her fourteenth on the year. Seattle went on a 4-0 scoring run to tie the set up at 9-9 a piece. At the media timeout, the Pack led by 15-14 after the Redhawks went on a 3-0 scoring run to tie it up before an error by Seattle gave Nevada the lead. Seattle forced Nevada to call timeout after the Redhawks, who had been trailing much of set four, regained the lead by two, going up 18-16. The Pack drew within one, forcing Seattle to call timeout after a back-and-forth showdown before coming back from the timeout tying the set up 22-22. The Redhawks reached the set point with the Pack once again trailing by two. Ultimately, Seattle would force set five with a 25-23 win over Nevada, tying the match 2-2.
 
Seattle went on a 4-0 scoring run to start the fifth and final set, leading Nevada by three with a score of 7-4. The Pack were able to close the deficit to two before the teams' switched sides of the court. The Redhawks went up 11-9 by two due to an attack error by the Pack, only being four away from securing the match. Seattle forced Nevada to call timeout after two back-to-back errors by the Pack gave Seattle two points to extend their lead 13-11. Arianna Bilby's kill secured the fifth set for Seattle 15-12 and the match 3-2, completing the reverse sweep over Nevada.

The Pack continue on the road next weekend traveling to Riverside, California for the CBU/UCR Invitational, hosted by both Cal Baptist and UC Riverside. Nevada will play a doubleheader Friday, Sept. 8 first against Oregon State at 11 a.m. followed by a 6 p.m. start time for match number two of the day against Cal Baptist. Saturday, Sept. 9, the Pack will wrap the invitational with a final match against UC Riverside at 11 a.m.
