RENO, Nev. – Nevada Football head coach Ken Wilson announced staff updates Monday, highlighted by two former Wolf Pack players stepping into new roles.
Virgil Green, the team's Director of Player Personnel since March 2022, has been elevated to tight ends coach. Offensive coordinator Derek Sage, who previously coached the tight end unit, will now directly oversee the Wolf Pack's quarterbacks.
Wilson also announced the return of two-time Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year Carson Strong, who will assist the staff in various capacities.
Green's promotion, along with last week's announcement of Peyton Yanagi as special teams coordinator, rounds out the Wolf Pack staff heading into Saturday's 3:30 p.m. season opener at USC.
Virgil Green – Tight Ends
Green played three seasons (2008-10) at tight end with the Wolf Pack, making 72 receptions for 939 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was the second-leading receiver on a star-studded 2010 football team, making 35 catches for 515 yards and five touchdowns during a 13-1 season which included a WAC title, a 20-13 victory over Boston College in the Fight Hunger Bowl, and a No. XX final national ranking.
Green was selected by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft, and went on to earn a Super Bowl title (Super Bowl 50). He was a two-time AFC Champion (2013, 2015), and, during the Broncos' 2015 Super Bowl-winning campaign, he caught 22 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown.
Over his 10-year NFL career (Denver, 2011-17; Los Angeles Chargers, 2018-20) Green played 137 games, making 102 catches for 1,145 yards with seven touchdowns.
Carson Strong
Strong spent four seasons (2018-21) with the Wolf Pack, the final three as the team's starting quarterback. The Vacaville, Calif., native went on to finish his career third all-time at Nevada in passing yards (9,368) and touchdown passes (74), and set the program single-season record for touchdown passes with 36 in 2021. He took home consecutive Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year awards (2020-21), becoming just the fifth individual in conference history to do so. The Wolf Pack qualified for a bowl in each of his three seasons as the starting signal-caller, including a victory over Tulane in the 2020 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. After earning his degree from Nevada, Strong signed a free-agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, and spent the 2022 training camp with the club. Strong went on to sign with the USFL's Michigan Panthers, with whom he appeared in four games, completing 31-of-49 passes for 266 yards and a touchdown.
