Nevada soccer completes Virginia trip with scoreless draw at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. - Nevada women's soccer finished its Virginia road trip with a 0-0 draw at Richmond Sunday at President's Field at River Road.

Redshirt freshman Ally Larkin came up with a shutout in her first career match at Nevada and is the first Nevada goalkeeper to have a shutout in her first career match in the net since Kendal Stovall in 2018 (Aug. 17 vs. Idaho, W, 1-0). The Pack only allowed two shots on goal to Richmond, where Larkin collected her first two saves of her collegiate career.

"Overall, this was a successful weekend for our team," head coach Vanessa Valentine said. "Having the opportunity to play the No. 5 team in the nation in our first match was a great test. The score does not reflect the discipline and organization that we maintained throughout the match. To turn around and play a good opponent at Richmond was not an easy task.

"I thought our girls did well to control the majority of the match, but were unlucky on a few of our chances. Overall, I am very proud of the team. This was great experience and great preparation for the start of our season."

The Pack quickly attacked the Richmond defense, with freshman Olivia Loomis firing the match's first shot 13 seconds in. After Nevada's first shot on goal of the day was saved by Richmond, the Pack continued to control the possession and create offensive chances.

With Nevada's defense preventing Richmond from getting a shot off through the first 30 minutes, the Spiders got their first opportunity at the 31-minute mark. The Pack's defense, however, prevented the shot from going on target and Nevada blocked Richmond's final shot of the first half to keep things scoreless at halftime.

Trading shots back-and-forth halfway through the second period, Nevada looked to capitalize off a shot on goal with 22 minutes to play. With Richmond coming up with the save following Nevada's offensive chance, the Spiders looked to turn their defense into offense.

The Spiders' offense came up with their first shot on goal of the day with seven minutes remaining in the match, but Larkin leaped in the air to tip the ball away from the goal for her first save. Larkin kept the shutout intact by collecting another save off Richmond's second shot on goal with four minutes left to play.

Richmond got off a final shot with 20 seconds left, but the Nevada defense forced the Spiders to shoot off target.

Nevada goes back on the road Friday to take on Southern Utah in Cedar City at 3 p.m.
