RENO, Nev. - Nevada cut an eight-run deficit down to two in Sunday's rubber game against Fresno State, but it was not enough as the Wolf Pack fell, 14-8, in its home finale.
Dawson Martin went 3-for-5 with four RBIs for the Pack, and his three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth brought the Pack within two at 8-6.
Martin was one of four position players in the starting lineup who had been honored as part of Nevada's Senior Day prior to the contest. Overall, Martin, Matt Clayton, Henry Strmecki, and Jaxon Woodhouse combined for eight of the Pack's nine hits of the day, with Woodhouse driving in two runs along with Martin's four RBIs.
But Fresno State put runners at the corners with none out to open the sixth, and Ben Newton's RBI double followed by Tyler Davis' sacrifice fly put the Bulldog lead back to four.
Nevada (18-27, 8-15 MW) fought back in the seventh, scoring twice on a two-out Fresno State error to again get within a pair at 10-8, but Fresno State (24-23, 13-14 MW) added a run in the eighth, then scored three times in the ninth to put things away.
Newton was 4-for-4 with three RBIs on the day, with his triple in the second driving in Bobby Blandford with the game's opening run. Davis also drove in three runs, going 3-for-5, adding an RBI double in Fresno State's three-run second inning against Nevada starter Jason Doktorczyk.
Doktorczyk fell to 3-4 on the season, giving up seven runs on 11 hits over two-plus innings. Marco Pirrucello and Blandford hit back-to-back solo homers in the third, as the Bulldogs scored four times to go up 7-0.
Bulldog starter Trevor Garcia allowed six runs over five innings, getting his fourth win of the season. Tommy Hopfe allowed just one hit over a scoreless final two innings to get his ninth save.
Nevada embarks on a five-game week coming up. The Pack will travel to Tucson for a Wednesday night contest at Arizona before heading to Albuquerque for four games at New Mexico.
