TUCSON, Ariz. - A back-and-forth affair in the desert between Nevada and Arizona came down to the final at-bat, with the Wildcats walking off with a 10-9 win on Emilio Corona's solo homer.
Nevada (18-28) tied things at 9-9 on Dawson Martin's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth before Corona led off the bottom half with his home run off of reliever Clayton Ray.
The ball was flying in the desert air Wednesday night, as the teams combined for eight home runs. JR Freethy posted his first two-homer game, connecting on a pair of solo shots, while Matt Clayton highlighted the Pack's five-run second with a three-run homer, his ninth of the season. Clayton and Freethy led the Pack with three hits apiece on the night.
The five-run second put the Pack in front after Arizona opened the scoring with a run in the first. The Wildcats, however, chipped away, scoring once in the second then getting two more on Kiko Romero's two-run homer in the third.
After Nevada capitalized on a Wildcat error to score and up its lead to 6-4 in the fourth, Arizona (26-20) jumped ahead, 8-6, behind two-run homers from Mac Bingham and Chase Davis in the bottom half.
Freethy's solo shots in the fifth and seventh tied things up at 8-8 before Davis hit his second homer of the game in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-8.
Nevada reliever Easton Marks was a bright spot for the Pack staff Wednesday, striking out five and giving up just two runs over 4.1 innings of work from the fourth to the eighth frames.
Chase Barraza got the win for Arizona, despite giving up the tying run in the ninth.
Nevada heads to Albuquerque for a four-game Mountain West series at New Mexico. The series begins with a doubleheader Friday, with the nightcap a makeup of the March 26 snowed-out game in Reno.
