RENO, Nev. - Fresno State evened the weekend series against Nevada Saturday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park with a 14-6 victory.
Trailing 7-4 in the fifth, Nevada (18-26, 8-14 MW) loaded the bases with none out but came away with just one run against Bulldog starter Roman Angelo. Fresno State (23-23, 11-14 MW) broke the game open in the ensuing frame, scoring four times in the top of the sixth to go up 11-5.
Fresno State loaded the bases with none out against Pack reliever
Kolby Kmetko. Kmetko struck out Ben Newton and got two strikes against Tyler Davis, but a batted ball down the line to first off the end of Davis' bat could not be played in time, and the Bulldogs got the first run of the frame.
Travis Welker drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a four-run game, then Grady Morgan capped the inning with a two-run single to center.
The Pack had one more opportunity to narrow the gap, loading the bases with one out in the sixth. But Fresno State reliever Jack Anker struck out
Henry Strmecki and got
JR Freethy to fly out to center to end the threat. Anker would allow just one run on three hits over the final four innings to pick up his second save.
Nevada hit well against Angelo, getting five runs on 11 hits over five innings.
Jesse Pierce came up just a double shy of the cycle for the Wolf Pack, finishing 4-for-4 with two singles, a triple, and a homer, with two RBIs. Pierce's two-run homer, his 10th of the season, tied up the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third.
Nolan Wilson had three hits, and
Matt Clayton went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
But Nevada couldn't get the shutdown inning. Fresno State got three in the top of the fourth against Pack starter
Peyton Stumbo, with Morgan's two-run homer doing the damage. Stumbo would end up giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits with five strikeouts over four innings, falling to 2-6 on the year.
Nevada will honor nine seniors for Senior Day ahead of Sunday's rubber game, which is set for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch.
