RENO, Nev. – Nevada catcher
Matt Clayton and third baseman
Jesse Pierce were named to the All-Mountain West Second Team, the conference announced Thursday.
The honors are the first in the careers for both players.
Clayton, Nevada's lone returner among position players in 2023, had a career year in his fifth season with the Wolf Pack. The Yuba City, Calif., native posted career highs in numerous categories, including batting (.309), hits (63), homers (10), doubles (18), and RBIs (38).
In Mountain West play, Clayton, one of just two Pack players to start all 30 contests, batted .311, and led the team with 16 doubles and 26 RBIs, while finishing second in batting, home runs (six), and hits (37).
The All-Mountain West selection caps a standout Nevada career for Clayton, a five-year starter who started 51 of the Pack's 53 games this season.
Pierce, in his first campaign with the Pack, played much of the season at third base after starting the season in the outfield. Pierce led the Pack with 11 homers, a .318 average, and 41 runs scored on the season, and ranked second with 36 RBIs.
Playing all 30 Mountain West games, with 29 starts, Pierce led Nevada with a .333 batting average, 38 hits, 29 runs scored, and eight home runs. The Las Vegas native also had nine doubles and two triples.
