4x4 shatters school record, Costello claims gold on final day of MW Championships

CLOVIS, Calif. – After a successful three-day slate in Clovis, California, Nevada track and field finish the 2023 Outdoor Mountain West Championships in sixth place with 65 points, seeing numerous personal records, all-time list appearances, and podium finishes across the board, including Emily Costello claiming gold in the 200-meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay smashing the school record by six seconds. The Pack also scored higher than in-state rival UNLV, who finished seventh with 58.20 points, earning a point in the Silver State Series presented by American First Credit Union.

"We had so many positives come out of the week," said head coach Shantel Twiggs. "We didn't have things fall exactly the way we wanted but I am so proud of the team. As we head into the remainder of the postseason, we hope to continue to improve and get people into the final round in Austin, Texas."

In late afternoon, Nevada's third and final day of the Outdoor Championships began starting off with the remaining jumping events, the triple jump, and the high jump. In the triple jump, Rayven Nealey and Maria Paz Milani moved on the final after jumping marks of 12.40 meters and 12.19 meters. In the final, Nealey reached a mark of 12.45 meters, finishing seventh and scoring two points. Paz Milani rounded out the field in ninth (12.19m). Sica Verwasch also competed in the triple jump, her furthest jump being a mark of 11.61 meters to finish 13th.

The track events kicked off with the 4x100 meter relay, the first of two of the evening. The Nevada 'A' team of Bonét Henderson, Emily Costello, Lilly Gregg, and Rayven Nealey brought home the bronze, running a time of 45.15, remaining the second fastest time in Nevada school history, breaking their mark of 45.30 the squad ran two weekends ago at the Fresno State Invitational. Nevada's 'A' podium finish marks their second of the weekend, pulling in six points for the team. This finish is an improvement from last season, the relay squad of Gregg, Costello, Marske, and Ross taking fifth with a time of 46.55 at the 2022 Outdoor Mountain West Championships.

After racing the second leg in the 4x100 meter relay an hour before her start in the 400-meter dash, Emily Costello picked up another piece of hardware, securing a third-place finish with a time of 52.97, narrowly missing her own school record (52.95) and scoring six points. Costello's finish marks her second outdoor career medal in the event. Annalies Kalma earned another point for the Pack with her eighth-place finish in a time of 55.35.

In Costello's third event of the night, she earned her first individual career Mountain West gold medal in an individual event, placing first in the 200-meter dash with a new personal record time of 23.19, earning 10 points, and holding the second all-time spot at Nevada in the event. Costello came just within the school record of 23.13, long held by Ali McKnight (1995).

In the 100-meter dash, Bonét Henderson saw a new personal record with a time of 11.79, scoring two points and placing seventh, remaining in the eighth fastest spot in school history, breaking her previous personal record from the preliminaries on Friday afternoon (11.83).

Halyn Senegal posted the second-fastest 800 meters time in Nevada school history after recording a new personal record of 2:05.12, placing second in the event and scoring eight points, dropping two seconds to earn her first outdoor career podium finish. During the indoor season, Senegal also claimed a second-place podium finish in the event, where she holds the third-fastest time in school history.

In the high jump, Valeria Paez-Rueda represented the Pack as the solo jumper, finishing with a mark of 1.53 meters in 18th. Sarah Marske recorded a time of 14.25 in the 100-meter hurdles, placing eighth and scoring one point for the Pack.

Concluding the hurdles events of the championships, Carolyn Ross competed in the 400-meter hurdles, where she ran a time of 1:00.67 to finish sixth and score three points. Emily Clarke and Marije Hijman represented the Pack in the 5,000 meters, placing 15th (16:57.86) and 31st (17:50.60) respectively.

In the final event of the championships, Nevada's 'A' 4x400 relay made up of Emily Costello, Annalies Kalma, Carolyn Ross, and Halyn Senegal went out with a bang, claiming a second-place finish, smashing the school record by six seconds in a time of 3:35.98.
