Heartbreaker brings Nevada’s season to a close

(3) Boise State 4, (2) Nevada 3
Thursday, April 27, 2023
Las Vegas, Nev. – Darling Tennis Center

LAS VEGAS – Nevada men's tennis season comes to a heartbreaking close after narrowly falling 4-3 to the Boise State Broncos in the semifinals Thursday night, bringing their chances of capturing a second Mountain West Tournament Championship title to an end.

Much like how Nevada's match began against Air Force yesterday, both the Pack and the Broncos split the first two doubles match wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Boise State's Samuel Sippel and Jan Lucca Marquadt took Nevada's Loris Zisswiller and Satchel Benn 6-3 at No. 3, while Matheo Coupu and Youssef Kadiri Hassani defeated Caden Moortgat and James Van Herzeele in a close 6-4 win, bringing the fate of the doubles point down to No. 1. Putting up a tough battle, Delmas N'tcha and partner Juan Batalla secured the doubles point for Nevada in a tiebreaker showdown, beating out Michael Bott and Simon Costas Arca 7-6 (5).

N'Tcha led the way for the Pack in singles, putting Nevada up by two after winning in straight sets at No. 3 over Boise State's Moorgat in 6-1, 6-1. The Broncos shortened the lead after Idriss Haddouch defeated Satchel Benn in straight sets with his 6-2, 6-4 victories at No. 6, bringing Boise State within one to tie it all up. Zisswiller extended Nevada's lead to 3-1, putting them back up by two after taking John Chin in a three set battle, ultimately securing wins in the first and third sets, putting the Pack one match away from moving on to the championship.

The last singles matches at Nos. 1, 2, and 4 came down to the wire, all seeing three set face-offs between the Broncos and the Wolf Pack. At No. 2, Sam Sippel would secure Boise State's second point of the evening, after taking Kadiri Hassani 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, putting the Broncos down by just one with the remaining two matches still very much in play. After a hard-fought contest between Coupu and Arca Costas in the final set, Arca Costas would come out on top to put the match at 3-3 across the board, all coming down to No. 4 between Nevada's Liborio and Boise State's Van Herzeele. Liborio put everything on the line but couldn't quite hold on as Van Herzeele won the third set 7-5 to clinch the match for the Broncos.

Boise State will take on the No. 4 seed Utah State after the Aggies upset the No. 1 seed New Mexico 4-3 in semifinal number one, advancing to the championship match scheduled for tomorrow at 5 p.m. PT.
